Chapter 764

    ?Chapter 764:

Elena was quiet but kind, and always treated the staff with respect. Alexander, Jolie, and their three sons all worshipped her. And yet Evelyn, who had only just joined the family, was already talking about Elena with such disdain. If Jeffry heard her, he’d be furious.

The butler said carefully, “Mrs. Harper, since it belongs to Miss Harper, shall I pack it up and give it to her?”

Evelyn carelessly tossed the dress back into the box. The once perfectly folded dress was now crumpled like a piece of garbage.

The butler’s frown deepened into a full-blown scowl. He bent down, carefully smoothed out the dress, meticulously refolded it, and ced it back in the gift box.

Just as he was about to head up the stairs, a light bulb suddenly went off in Evelyn’s head, and she called out to him, “Hold on! This dress Elena made—it’s gotta be for me!”

The butler paused, a hint of doubt in his voice. “Mrs. Harper, are you sure about that? Maybe we should double-check with Miss Harper.”

Evelyn snatched the dress out of his hands. “Of course it’s for me! It’s gotta be her way of saying ‘sorry.’”

Evelyn snorted. So, Elena wasn’tpletely clueless after all. Elena must’ve realized she’d pissed her off at the wedding, so she designed a new dress, even got her precious designer Fannie to make it, just to make amends.

Even though Evelyn looked down on Elena—that country bumpkin who always had to disagree with her—this dress was made by Fannie. And for Fannie’s sake, she figured she could at least give it a shot.

Without another word, Evelyn marched straight to the fitting room on the first floor and changed into the dress. She stood in front of the mirror, checking herself out, and started to like the dress more and more—even though it was a little tight. If only it had been made one size bigger.

Elena had just stepped out of the shower and was making her way downstairs for a ss of water when the butler caught sight of her. The second he saw her, his stiff shoulders dropped, like he’d been holding his breath and could finally exhale.

“Miss Harper, were you waiting on a package from abroad?” the butler asked, sounding both relieved and cautious.

A package? From overseas? Elena paused. It clicked right away—it had to be the custom dress Fannie had justpleted for her. She gave a small nod. “Yeah. Did it get here?”

The butler nodded quickly. “Yes, it was just delivered—express shipping.”

Elena figured she’d hand it over to Louis in the morning. She poured a ss of water and then turned to ask, “Where’s the package? I’ll just take it back upstairs.”

The butler froze for a second, clearly ufortable. He shifted awkwardly. “Someone already opened it.”

Elena’s brow creased, about to ask who thought it was okay to open her stuff—when Evelyn strolled out from a side room, wearing the exact dress she’d designed. That answered that.

“Who gave you permission to wear that?” Elena asked coldly, her voice dropping into ice.

Evelyn stopped in her tracks. “I thought… wasn’t it a gift you prepared for me? Like, you know, a peace offering or something?”

Elena’s eyes narrowed. “And why exactly would I be giving a peace offering to you?” she asked, genuinely baffled. What nonsense was Evelyn spinning now?

Evelyn had assumed Elena was finally being nice—that she’d made the dress as some kind of truce. But once she saw how icy Elena looked, her face twisted with annoyance.
