?Chapter 1148:
Yet, in that moment, Bryan sped my hand, his grip tender but resolute. “Makenna, as long as I draw breath, no harm wille to you. I swear I will find our child and bring justice for Rosaline.”
His pale face only deepened the warmth flooding my heart. I nodded, my voice soft but certain. “I trust you.”
Once I was sure Bryan was stable, my gaze shifted to Rosaline’s still form and Evie, unconscious beside her. Rosaliney peaceful, her weathered face adorned with a serene smile, as if she had simply drifted into a gentle sleep.
Evie, pale and fragile,y nearby, her breaths shallow, a faint whisper of life.
A torrent of grief surged within me, threatening to unmoor my resolve. My knees buckled under the weight of the loss, and I nearly copsed.
yton caught me just in time, his expression filled with concern. “Makenna, are you holding up? Don’t push yourself to the edge.”
I bit my lip, battling the sorrow wing at my chest, and managed a nod. “I’m… alright. It’s just…” My voice cracked, the words failing me.
yton pulled me into aforting embrace, his voice a soothing balm against the storm inside me.
“This isn’t your fault. Don’t carry this burden alone.”
I drew a steadying breath, willing myself to regain control. This was no time to crumble—I had to remain strong.
Wiping away my tears, I stepped back from yton’s arms and turned to the soldiers nearby, my voice firm. “Bring them back to Marehelm. We leave no one behind.”
Makenna’s POV:
When we returned to Marehelm, Evie was still unconscious. We ced her in the room next to mine, and Jett immediately took charge of her care.

Bryan’s condition had improved, but he was still far from out of danger. He needed plenty of rest. The arrow had struck his shoulder, and though the wound was covered, each time the bandages were changed, fresh blood seeped through the gauze. I stayed by his side, changing his bandages carefully and administering his medicine, making sure not to cause him any more pain.
Despite his paleplexion, there was a tenderness in his eyes, as if he truly appreciated the attention I was giving him.
“Makenna, you really should leave this to the servants and nurses. There’s no need for you to do everything,” Dominic said, a slight frown forming as he shot me an annoyed look while I cared for Bryan. It was clear he was a bit envious.
“Yeah, he’s not a baby. Why are you making such a big deal out of it?” yton added, his voice tinged with jealousy.
Bryan settled back against the bed, a smug grin on his face. Though his voice was weak, he couldn’t help but tease, “This is my badge of courage for protecting Makenna. You guys were too slow to do anything back then.” He nced at his shoulder, now wrapped in heavy bandages, as if showing off a trophy.
Dominic and yton clenched their jaws, clearly irritated by his words.
“Look at you, all proud of yourself!” Dominic muttered, spinning on his heel and walking out.
yton shot Bryan a fiery look before storming off after Dominic. I just shook my head, resigned, and continued changing Bryan’s bandages.
He looked at me and, with a grin, said, “Makenna, with you taking care of me like this, I might not want to get better too soon.”
