    “You don’t have to eat it if you don’t want to,” Kaiden said, ncing at Ellie’s belly. “This is quite the hassle.”


    “Why are you holding it against the baby? Come on, it’s not our baby’s fault.” Ellieughed and added, “I’m only two months along. Our baby can’t hear us yet.” In that moment, everything felt warm and peaceful, as if their little bubble was safe from the outside world.


    However, they both knew too well that beyond their cozy suite, reality was looming, unavoidable.


    By midnight, Ellie had still not heard from Kristopher. She tossed and turned, restless.

    Kaiden, too, woke at her gasp. He wrapped his arms around the trembling Ellie, soothing her as he flicked on the soft bedside light.


    “Honey, what’s wrong? Did a nightmare scare you?”


    Tears streaming down her face, Ellie lifted her gaze to Kaiden, wrapped her arms around his neck, and buried herself in his embrace.


    If Bolton’s words were meant to burden her with guilt, they had certainly found their mark.
