?Chapter 829:
He noticed three missed calls on his phone.
They were all from Carole.
“Mr. Thorpe, Miss Lambert fell ill, and the hospital said she left your number. They tried reaching you, then called me when you didn’t respond,” Bruce reported in a low voice.
“Lack of funds?” Kaiden inquired.
He wasn’t a doctor, so all he could do was cover medical expenses.
Bruce hesitated. “No, the hospital assumed you were her family.”
Kaiden’s expression darkened a bit. He was ufortable being referred to as Carole’s family.
“Where are the Lamberts?” he inquired.
They were Carole’s genuine rtives.
“The Lamberts have distanced themselves from Carole. It wouldn’t be right for her to contact them now.”
Right after Bruce spoke, he noticed Kaiden lost in thought.
“Are you feeling pity for Miss Lambert, Mr. Thorpe?”
“Feeling pity for her?” Kaiden let out a hollowugh.
Sensing the sarcasm, Bruce felt a wave of unease wash over him, choosing to remain silent.
If this had happened six months ago, Kaiden would’ve felt pity for Carole. He would’ve rushed to the hospital the moment she called, without a second thought.
Looking after Carole was both hismitment to Leo and his duty.
Yet Carole had likely already put Leo out of her mind. When Kaiden heard the words “your brother is dead,” he felt utterly let down by Carole.
As for why the Lamberts had distanced themselves from Carole… Carole returned the small locket, gifted to her by the elders, to the Lamberts to avoid punishment for her mistake. This was all just karma in action.

Carole’s call came through again.
It was her fourth attempt.
She seemed determined to keep trying until Kaiden picked up.
Kaiden remained silent after epting the call.
Within two seconds, he heard Carole’s frail voice say, “Kaiden…”
“I’ll have someone look after you at the hospital,” Kaiden responded, his tone cold.
Meanwhile, Carole, confined to her hospital bed, let tears escape her eyes. Though she was merely suffering from a cold and fever, it wasn’t anything serious.
Initially, she hoped to earn Kaiden’s sympathy by exploiting the situation, but she hadn’t anticipated that he would arrange for someone to look after her.
“Kaiden, you must know I’m longing to see you!”
