    “I confess, I should have been upfront about myst meeting with Kristopher. We’re just acquaintances, though. If you disagree, I need to hear why. You can’t just be unreasonable, right?” she demanded.


    Kaiden responded with unexpected calm, “Ellie, remember how you thought I picked on Howard without reason?”


    Her anger red at first, but Kaiden’s sudden mention of Howard caught her off guard, halting her fury as she grasped his point.


    Back then, Kaiden had issues with Howard, but Ellie hadn’t realized Howard’s feelings for her. She had thought Kaiden was just being overbearing.


    “I’ve only met Kristopher a few times,” Ellie stated, her expression turning icy. “And don’t start with ims that Kristopher likes me too. I’m not a prize everyone’s after.”


    Kaiden realized Ellie still underestimated her appeal.


    Deep down, he wished to shield her from the knowledge that Kristopher had been quietly admiring her from afar for years.
