?Chapter 537:
Her voice rose, catching both Ellie’s and Jorge’s attention.
As Ellie looked back at Carole, a silent hostility filled the room. Carole, her lips tightly sealed as if holding back a sea of sorrow, ran off crying.
“Kaiden, you need to check on her,” Jorge advised. “Carole is a Lambert. We need to avoid any trouble.”
“I’ll handle it.” Ellie quickly left before Kaiden or Jorge could respond.
Finding Carole was easy. The line of bodyguards gave her away. At the balcony’s end, Carole’s figure was visible, shaking with soft sobs.
Ellie, getting closer, was greeted by a strong breeze.
“Why are you here?” Carole turned around at the noise, quickly dabbing at her eyes to hide her tears.
“So, you thought making a scene would make Kaiden chase after you?” Ellie’s voice was light as she offered a small shrug. “Turns out, I’m the one who showed up.”
Intentionally irritating Carole, Ellie continued, “I’m here to give you somefort, believe it or not.”
Carole felt a rush of anger. She quickly wiped away her tears and fired back, “Ellie, aren’t you the one who wants me out of Harvillston? What gives you the right to meddle in Kaiden’s choices?”
“Because I’m his wife in the eyes of thew, and I own half of his business.”
How could Ellie stand leaving Carole—who could threaten her position—close to Kaiden? The very idea made Ellie sick.
“Ellie, you should consider yourself lucky to have married Kaiden because of the marriage alliance between the Gordon and Thorpe families!” Carole shot back.
“That’s right!” Ellie crossed her arms, nodding in agreement. “And what about the marriage alliance between the Lambert and Thorpe families? Why not hold onto that advantage?”
Before Carole could reply, Ellie cut in, “Carole, you were practically Leo’s fiancée, his true love. Is this your way of respecting his memory?”

Carole burst outughing. Her smile was dark, hinting at a clever scheme unfolding.
“Why do you think Leo left me in Kaiden’s care?”
She moved closer to Ellie, whispering as though sharing a deep secret, “Because he knew my heart belonged to Kaiden all along! I’ve always been in love with his brother!”
Ellie recoiled slightly, taken aback by Carole’s words. “You’re… You’re just making this up.”
She tried to maintain herposure despite her racing heart. Her intention was to rattle Carole, but the truth was not easily obscured.
Carole sneered. “Ellie, you don’t understand Leo. Had you known him, you wouldn’t question my words. He was extraordinary and kind-hearted, always protective of Kaiden, caring for Brisa, and respectful toward Jorge.” Ellie had heard of Leo. Renowned for his gentle nature, open-mindedness, and business savvy, he was a standout in high society.
“Leo loved me for years. When he passed, I believe he thought he was granting me freedom. He asked Kaiden to take care of me to make up for me.” Carole spoke with a distant gaze. “I’ve spent years pondering what Leocked that made me not love him. The truth is, he was perfect.”
