    But Ellie ignored her and sneered at Kaiden. “I am not in good spirits, indeed.”


    Kaiden was unfazed by her obvious sarcasm. They were both seated, so he easily reached out and ruffled Ellie’s hair. “Go to bed early if you don’t feel well.”


    Not only was his gesture intimate, his voice was filled with affection, too. Not that he noticed.


    Needless to say, the sight stung Carole. She felt like an outsider standing there, so she quickly mumbled an excuse and left in a hurry.


    The tips of her ears were tinged red with embarrassment as she fled.


    A smile slowly formed on Ellie’s lips as she watched Carole go.


    Momentster, Carole was holed up in a cubicle inside the bathroom. She sat on the toilet, her hand pressed against her mouth to stifle her sobs, even as tears streamed down her face.


    None of it made sense to her.


    Why did Kaiden get married?


    Why would he do that shortly after she went abroad to pursue her studies?


    Worst of all, he seemed devoted to Ellie.


    When she was gone, no other woman was supposed to catch his eye!


    “Carole, are you there?” a voice called out from outside the cubicle. “Is something wrong?”


    Carole stood up and gingerly opened the door. When she saw that it was just Aphrodite Watts, she rushed forward and hugged her friend.


    “Hey,” Aphrodite said nervously. “Why are you crying?”


    “Aphrodite, Kaiden and Ellie… He… He is with Ellie now…” The words spilled out of Carole in between her choked sobs. She couldn’t bring herself to use the word “married.” If she did, it would be as good as admitting that she was a third party who was out to ruin their rtionship.


    In a way, Carole was d that Kaiden and Ellie had refrained from announcing their marriage to the public.

    Aphrodite breathed a sigh of relief when she heard this. “It’s not a big deal. You’ve been gone for several years, so Kaiden must have felt lonely. He is a man with needs; it’s understandable for him to seek physicalfort from other women. And who better to get it from than an attractive woman with no family background? Don’t worry about it. I’m sure that Kaiden has no feelings for Ellie.”


    “Really? You’re not just saying that, are you?” Carole gripped Aphrodite’s hand as if it were a lifeline.


    Aphrodite nodded. She really didn’t believe that Kaiden loved Ellie.


    “Why would I lie to you? Things are different now. Ellie is no longer the prominent figure she once was. How can Kaiden possibly fall for her? She’s just his ything, nothing more.”


    “But… they are still together…”


    “They’ll break up sooner orter. Come on, even a good number of married couples get divorced every year.”


    Carole blinked as the realization dawned on her. That was right, married couples could still get divorced. She was finally convinced by Aphrodite’s ims.


    So now, she just needed that divorce to happen.
