Chapter 56

    ?Chapter 56:

Attempting to leave the bed, Ellie winced from a sharp pain in her knee.

The injury on Ellie’s knee, worsened from being wet the night before, throbbed more than it had yesterday.

    “Ouch…”

Ellie nearly toppled over, but Kaiden caught her in time.

    “Stay still!” hemanded sharply.

Blinking, Ellie felt a wave of embarrassment. “I need to go to the bathroom…”

Without a word, Kaiden scooped her up and carried her to the bathroom, setting her down gently.

“Let me know when you’re finished,” he said before stepping out and closing the door.

Alone, Ellie pondered over the sudden change in Kaiden’s behavior.

Was he being kinder because she was injured on his behalf?

Sitting there, she couldn’t help but feel a bit self-conscious.

When Kaiden had his shower, she could hear the water running inside. Could Kaiden hear her now?

His personal items filled the bathroom, making her acutely aware of his presence.

It was as if she had wandered into uncharted territory.

Overwhelmed, Ellie hid her face in her hands.

She still couldn’t remember the events of the previous night. Why was her bandage changed, why was she in Kaiden’s room, and why was she wearing his shirt?

Eventually, Kaiden knocked on the door, his toneced with concern.

    “I’ming!” she called out.

Ellie hurried, flushing the toilet and washing her hands before opening the door to find Kaiden waiting to carry her again.

“Wait!” she eximed, suddenly finding the idea of a wheelchair appealing. “I can use the wheelchair.”

Being so close to a man felt unfamiliar to her.

Kaiden, noticing her difort, leaned against the wall with a teasing grin.

    “Mrs. Thorpe, feeling shy?”

She shot him a look worth a hundred thousand and replied calmly, “You’re my husband. What’s there to be shy about?”

He touched her chin gently, then, after a moment, nodded and lifted her. “The wheelchair is just outside.”

Kaiden had an urgent meeting and had to leave quickly, entrusting Ellie to the maid at the door.

“Look after her well,” he instructed.

The maid remembered the previous night’s events and nodded earnestly. “Absolutely, we’ll take great care of Mrs. Thorpe!”

Cayson walked Kaiden to the door, a sly smile on his face. He couldn’t resist teasing, “Mr. Thorpe, did Mrs. Thorpe spend the night in your—”

Kaiden looked back at him, his response straightforward. “Where else would my wife sleep if not in my room?”
