Shattered 52

She leaned against the headboard and her expression was calm and distant, wih long hair draped over her shoulders, which made her small and palm–sized face look even thinner and paler.

All day, she had only spoken once in the morning when she pleaded for those people.

After that, she hadn’t said another words.

    Her silence was unsettling.

“Prisci.” Wesley softly called his wife’s name.

Prisci lifted her gaze from the book and looked up at Wesley.

She didn’t speak but only questioned him with her eyes.

Wesley’s throat felt dry; suddenly, he didn’t know how to begin.

His mother had acted too extremely, and he bore some responsibility as well.

He had no idea how she had endured that whole night of humiliation.

“What would you like to eat? I’ll ask to bring it over.” His tone was gentle, and he raised his hand, hoping to gently stroke her hair.

Prisci turned her head slightly to avoid him.

    Her rejection was obvious.

Wesley clenched his palm and then leaned down to hold her shoulders to meet her gaze.

“The way Mom handled things was wrong. She hurt you, and I apologize on her behalf.”

Forcing someone to kneel was a real and tangible humiliation,

Prisci met his eyes calmly, neither sad nor happy.

Wesley felt agitated. He would have preferred her to shout and make a scene, rather than look at him with such eyes.

“You are also responsible for this.”

Prisci’s fingers curled and gripped the page of her book tightly.

The page made a faint creaking sound.

“You made too much of the Larissa matter. That’s why I got so angry that I fainted,” Wesley analyzed.

If she had been more obedient then and agreed not to associate with Eldridge, he wouldn’t have gotten so angry as to faint, and his mother wouldn’t have humiliated her.

Prisci lowered her eyes and forced back the tears at the corners.

    “I understand.”

That morning, the image of him punishing the doctor and firing those who had secretly taken photos to protect her was still vivid in her mind.

But just a few hourster, he was shifting the me onto her again.

    It was all her fault.

Wesley had thought that if she was obedient and admitted her he would tell her about the studio.

But all she said was that she understood.

Not that she admitted she was wrong.

The atmosphere fell silent once again.

Prisci turned her gaze back to the pages of her book.

Wesley, who felt bored, got up and left.

He didn’t know that the page in Prisci’s hand hadn’t been turned for a long time.

When Eldridge arrived, Prisci was moving around carefully.

Her knees had been on the hard floor for a long time. She had applied medicine, which helped a lot.

    But walking was still difficult.

Eldridge stood at the door for a moment beforeing in.

“Prisci, how are you?” he asked, running over to support her.

He had seen the photo, and felt both heartache and fury.

He couldn’t wait toe to the hospital.

Prisci leaned on his arm as she walked to the bed. “Moving around is better for the joints.”

There was a polite smile on her face.

Eldridge asked her, “Did Wesley force you to kneel?”

Wesley was a man with a high opinion of himself, he probabl have much respect for his own wife.

    In’t

Prisci sat on the edge of the bed. “No,”

“Then who was it?” Eldridge frowned and felt unable to think of anyone else who would do such a thing

Prisci shook her head. She couldn’t say Amelia’s name, or Wesley woulde after her again.

When Wesley came in, what he saw was Eldridge leaning over to talk to Prisci, while Prisci looked up at him with a smile.

Her attitude waspletely different from how she was with him.

His face darkened, and he turned to leave.

Eldridge didn’t stay long before leaving. Prisci sat for a while, then got up to move around again.

Suddenly, the phone on the bedside table started vibrating frantically

Prisci instinctively tried to walk faster, but the pain in her knees was like being stabbed with needles, so she had to slow down.

It wasn’t until the phone rang a second time that she answered.

Raelynn’s voice was serious and anxious: “Just got the news–Mr. Carlton ns to use you as a scapegoat.”

Prisci froze. “What do you mean?”

“The rumors about Mr. Carlton and Larissa’s suspected affair have red up again because of your photo, you know that, right?”

    “I know.”

“Mr. Carlton has contacted some marketing ounts and? release the truth that he and Larissa were childhood sweethearts.”
