Chapter 1846

    Chapter 1846:

“Okay.” Christina stole a quick kiss and slipped her arm through his as they walked inside together.

At this hour, Bethel was almost certainly asleep. Christina had asked Dn not to tell her about her return — she refused to have the older woman losing sleep just to wait up for her. She would give Bethel a pleasant surprise in the morning instead.

Christina slipped quietly into her bedroom. Everything was immacte, exactly as she had left it.

She pulled open the wardrobe and found it fuller than before — rows of carefully chosen garments, including several of the newest limited releases. She lifted a ck gown and recognized it immediately as one of thetest exclusive pieces. Dn must have added these after she told him she wasing back.

A warm, full feeling rose in her chest, and her throat tightened. This was what it felt like to be someone’s first thought — to be looked after in the quietest, most careful ways. Her world feltplete: devoted family, steadfast friends, and a partner who loved her with everything he had. In the years ahead, she intended to cherish all of it even more fiercely.

Christina lowered herself into the steaming bath with a long exhale. Had she not been so eager to taste Dn’s porridge, she might easily have drifted off from sheer contentment. It had been far too long since she had eaten anything he made, and now that she was back, she meant to savor every mouthful.

She stepped out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around her, damp hair clinging to her shoulders — and without warning, a hand shot toward her. Instinct took over immediately, and she seized the intruding wrist before she had even finished the thought.

Christina moved purely on instinct the moment she sensed someone approaching.

She didn’t realize it was Dn until her leg was already swinging toward him. Dn caught her foot with one hand, absorbing the blow. “Chrissie, rx — it’s just me,” he said softly.

She stopped the instant she heard his voice.

“I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to — it was just a reflex,” she said, guilt flickering across her face.

“I know,” Dn answered. He brushed her hair back gently, his expression darkening with quiet sorrow as he thought about everything she had survived. Without those reflexes, she might not be standing here at all. The thought was unbearable, and he cut it off before it could take hold, pulling her into his arms instead.

Feeling the warmth of her against him, he finally felt certain she was really there.

He was haunted, sometimes, by the fear that his life had be too perfect — that one day he would reach for her and find nothing. Even though Christina had made her choice and stayed, the dread never quite left him entirely.

Christina felt his grip tighten. The pressure was almost too much, but she didn’t pull away. She let him hold her for as long as he needed, sensing that this was something deeper than an embrace.
