?Chapter 2982:
“Yeah.” Louise gave a small nod, searching for the right words. “Colleen, I just ran into Brady in the elevator lobby.”
Colleen’s body tensed, her face instantly guarded as her eyes fixed on Louise.
“He…” Louise pressed her lips together, forcing a smile. “Did hee to see you?”
“No.” Colleen’s jaw tightened as she shook her head.
“Colleen!” Louise’s brows drew together in frustration. “There’s no need to lie. I already spoke to the nurse, and she told me Brady…”
“Mom!”
Colleen’s voice shook with emotion, her eyes filling with tears. “Yes! He was here to visit me! I sent him away and told him not toe back! What else do you need to know?”

Louise couldn’t help herself—there were still questions in her mind. “What did he say to you? Is he dating anyone now? Did you ever tell him about your condition?”
“Mom!” Colleen squeezed her eyes shut, unable to stand it any longer. She pressed her hands to her temples and shook her head in pain. “Just stop! How can you even ask me those things?”
When she looked up again, her eyes were brimming with tears. “I’ve let him down far too much already. No matter what he thinks of me, with my illness, how could I possibly have the nerve to face him again?”
Louise listened carefully and finally understood. “So he knows you’re sick… and he doesn’t care?”
“Mom!” Colleen’s teeth clenched as she yelled. “Enough! Don’t go on about this! There’s no way for us anymore! You’re the one who tore us apart!”
Louise was stunned into silence.
Yes, it was her. But who could have known her daughter would fall ill someday?
Colleen couldn’t hold it in any longer and began to sob.
She covered her face with both hands. “Mom, I care about him so much, but I don’t have the strength—or the courage—to be with him again!”
“Don’t cry. It’s all right.” Louise wrapped her arms around Colleen and held her tight. “Dr. Ramsey said your emotional state matters most for your recovery. You can’t let yourself get too upset. Staying happy is important.”
But how could anyone bring true happiness back to her?
That night, just before eight, Louise left the ward as usual.
But when she reached the first floor, she didn’t get off. She pressed the button, let the elevator doors close, and went right back up.
As she reentered the ward area, she spotted Brady standing off by the nurses’ station.
“Why are you back again? We’ve already told you…”
“I won’t step inside. I just want to take onest look from the door.”
“I’m sorry, but you have to leave now.”
