?Chapter 2939:
For more than a week, Hadley had been running herself ragged, traveling from city to city without pause. Atst, she finished her work.
Now she sat in the airport lounge, waiting for her flight back to Srixby. Holding her phone, she watched a video Melba had sent. It showed Joy fast asleep, and she couldn’t help but smile.
All of a sudden, the video cut off. An iing call popped up. It was Ellis.
Hadley’s heart gave a quick jolt. Could it be that he had already wrapped up his work?
She hesitated for a moment, then picked up. “Hello…”
“Miss Pearson!”
The voice on the other end wasn’t Ellis’s.
“I’m a colleague of Ellis!” The person hurriedly exined, “Ellis was injured on assignment. He can’t talk to you right now!”
On assignment? Injured?

Hadley froze for a moment, caught off guard. How was that possible? Hadn’t he been tied up recently with the interrogation of Gifford, Andrea, Letty, and the others?
Still, the suspicion vanished almost as soon as it surfaced. His colleague couldn’t possibly be lying to her.
Hadley asked, her foremost concern being Ellis’s safety, “How is he doing?”
“He’s unconscious right now. They’re rushing him to the hospital!” The person on the phone quickly added, “Miss Pearson, can youe as soon as you can? Before he cked out, he called your name!”
Hadley froze, startled. She gripped her phone tightly and answered, “I’m not in Srixby right now. I’ll head back as soon as I can. I’m about to board my flight.”
“Alright! We’ll be waiting for you!”
After the call ended, Hadley pressed her fingers to her brow and let out a deep sigh.
From what she heard, Ellis’s injuries sounded severe. She had actually nned to reach out to him and end things once she got back to Srixby.
But now…
She kept telling herself it could wait. The most important thing right now was making sure he was okay.
Her mind was all over the ce. When her phone rang again, the sound jolted her.
Xander’s name shed on the screen.
A chill of dread swept through Hadley as she hurried to answer.
“Hello, Xander?”
“Miss Pearson!” Xander’s tone was just as anxious and uneasy as Ellis’s colleague earlier. “Something’s wrong! Mr. Scott just copsed!”
“What?” Hadley froze in shock.
Clutching her phone tightly, she shot to her feet, her voice rising. “What happened?”
“He… he just fainted in the middle of the meeting!”
“How could this be happening?”
Suddenly, Hadley’s vision went blurry. Her mind went nk.
“I have no idea! He was just fine, and then he suddenly fainted. Now he’spletely unconscious! He’s not responding at all!” Xander continued, “Miss Pearson, do you think… do you think it could be…”
Even without him spelling it out, Hadley already understood. Eric had undergone major brain surgery before. Even though his doctors had confirmed his recovery after all those check-ups, there was no such thing as absolute certainty in this world.
His sudden copse was probably connected to that old injury.
“Don’t panic!” Hadley was so worried that for a moment, she could barely get the words out.
Trying to keep her voice steady, she asked Xander, “Has he been taken to the hospital?”
“Not yet!” Xander answered. “As soon as Mr. Scott fainted, I called for an ambnce. Right after, I called you!”
Right then, he shouted, “The doctor’s here! Miss Pearson, I’ll take Mr. Scott to the hospital first!”
“Okay!” Hadley quickly added, “Make sure he’s sent to the same hospital as before, okay?”
“Okay!”
“Got it! You should go now!”
“Alright!”
