    “Mr. Scott, would you like breakfast?” the caregiver asked.


    “No.” Eric shook his head. One thought came to mind. Would Hadleye?


    For the past few days, she had been the one to bring his breakfast. Would today be any different?


    Just then, a knock sounded at the door. Someone Eric knew stepped inside. It was the newly appointed police chief. They had met a few times before.


    The chief nodded and smiled in greeting.


    “Good morning, Mr. Scott.”


    Mr. Scott?


    Eric frowned. Until now, everyone had addressed him by his first name, as though he were nothing more than another regr suspect.


    What the chief said next eased his doubt.


    “We’ve found a key witness. Your suspicions have been cleared.”


    The chief motioned to his subordinate.


    The man stepped forward and removed the electronic ankle monitor from Eric.


    A key witness?


    Now free, Eric asked at once, “If it’s not too much trouble, may I know who the witness is?”


    “Bianca Scott.”


    So it was her.


    Eric froze in disbelief. He had never expected this.


    All along, he believed that even if his name were cleared, it woulde only after long and punishing trials.


    Yet here she was, caught so soon.


    Knock. Knock.


    The door opened again. Hadley entered first, with Cristian close behind.

    Eric’s eyes lit up at once.


    “Hadley!”


    There was no need for words. She already knew.


    “Yes.” Hadley met his gleaming eyes and said, “You’re free now. Cristian will handle the formalities. Once everything is settled, you can go home.”


    “Nice!” Eric nodded eagerly, a smile breaking across his face.


    Cristian smiled.


    “Mr. Scott, it’s all thanks to Miss Pearson. Last night, she recognized Bianca and followed her. Bianca was heavily disguised, yet Miss Pearson noticed her at once. She’s sharp-eyed.”


    With that, he left with the chief to take care of the paperwork.


    Now, only Eric and Hadley remained, facing each other.


    “So…” Eric’s smile grew as everything dawned on him.


    “You went after Bianca yesterday. So that’s why you never came.”


    Hadley nodded.


    “Yes.”


    “Ah…” Eric chuckled softly.


    “So, in the end, it was you who saved my life.”
