“Let’s just say I take care of things for him,” the man sneered, clearly unaware of the deeper ties between Jack and Jessica. “You had the nerve to humiliate Jack in public. Looks like you don’t know your ce.”
The truth was, this guy was just blowing off steam for Jack.
Her words had pissed Jack off, and now he wasshing out the only way he knew how—by bullying someone weaker. Jack was furious, and he wasn’t exactly known for treating people well when he was in a mood.
These men needed Jack’s backing. Even if they were annoyed, they wouldn’t turn on him. So they took it out on the easy target: Jessica.
This time, she was just in unlucky.
“What do you want?” Jessica asked, her voice calm but cold.
“Come with me, apologize to Jack, and make him happy!” the man ordered, his tone dripping with menace. “If you don’t, I’ll make sure you regret it.”
“Fine.” She knew there was no winning this one by force. “Lead the way.”
Jessica stepped out of the car, unbothered andposed. If she didn’t, she’d probably be dragged out anyway.
The window was already busted—there was no way Jessica was about to risk her neck.
Noticing how rattled she looked, the man finally backed off a little. “Get in my car!”
As the words left his mouth, one of his friends yanked the car door open. Jessica let out a soft breath, just barely holding it together. If they hadid a hand on her, she wouldn’t have stood a chance.
But if they dragged her to Jack, odds were it would be his goon who got chewed out—Jack wouldn’t dare hurt her.
“Wait!” the man suddenly called her back.
Jessica stayedposed and asked coolly, “What now?”
“I don’t know what kind of hold you’ve got on Jack, but I’ll say this right here and now.” The guy was still clutching his club, his voice sharp and threatening. “If you don’t apologize to him properly, I’ll be paying you another visit after today.”
Jessica didn’t say a word.
“If he’s even a little ticked, I swear I’ll bust your leg tomorrow.” His tone was deadly serious. “You get me?”
“I get it.” Jessica gave a small nod, but her mind was already racing with ns. There was no way in hell she was going to apologize to Jack.
Should she ask her dad for a couple of bodyguards? But if she did that, her dad would want answers—and once he found out what had happened today, she could kiss her stay at Melvin’s ce goodbye.
So then… what now?
“You said you get it—so get in the damn car!” the man growled, his eyes zing.
Jessica pressed her lips together and moved toward the car, a storm of feelings churning inside her chest.
She hadn’t even taken a full step when a heavy thud suddenly echoed through the air.
She spun around instinctively, just in time to see the man who’d been right beside her go flying from a brutal kick.
