?Chapter 1252:
“Jesse!” Nina protested, clearly not thrilled.
He raised an eyebrow. “You really want him seeing your messy room? Your desk’s still covered in hair ties and those little flower clips Uncle n used this morning.”
Nina paused, remembering. Right, her uncle had helped her with her hair earlier, and she hadn’t cleaned up since.
With a reluctant pout, she let Jesse take Jerome instead.
n watched the two boys disappear down the hall, then gently guided Nina back toward her room.
As they walked, Nina looked up, her tone serious. “Uncle n, wake me up when Jerome wakes up, okay?”
n smiled. “Of course. But hey—can I ask you something?” He continued without waiting for her reply, “Do you like him that much?”
Nina nodded without hesitation. “Yep!”
“What about Jesse?”
“Huh?”
“You don’t like Jesse anymore?” n teased.
“I do!” she said quickly, as if that was obvious. “Jesse’s my favorite person besides Mom and Dad!”
n chuckled. “Then howe you kept saying nice things about Jerome today—like how he’s taller and better than Jesse?” He’d noticed Jesse’s unease. “Don’t you think Jesse might feel a little upset hearing that?”
Nina tilted her head, thinking. “Why would he be upset?”
n crouched down to her level. “Well… if Jesse praised another little girl, saying she was smarter or prettier than you, wouldn’t you feel a little bad?” he reasoned.
She paused, thought about it, then shook her head. “No.”
“Why not?” n asked, genuinely curious.
“Jesse’s shy,” she said sweetly. “If he’s willing to y with other kids, I’d be happy for him.” Her voice was soft and sincere. “Besides, even if Jesse ys with other people… I’m still his sister.”

n paused at that, caught a little off guard by her honest answer. “Not worried he’ll ignore you someday?” he asked.
“He would never ignore me,” Nina said simply. “And I won’t ignore him either. But Jerome’s leaving today, so I need to spend time with him. Jesse’s always home—we can yter.”
After saying that, Nina yawned, gave a little stretch, and went in for her nap. n watched her go, a bit surprised. For someone so young, she understood things far beyond her years.
About forty minutester, everyone started stirring awake.
Nina, just like before, immediately went to find Jerome and pulled him along to y.
Jesse sat nearby with a book in his hands, pretending to read—but his eyes weren’t moving, and his mind was clearly elsewhere.
n walked over, casually taking a seat next to him. “She said something before her nap,” he said. “Told me she knows you’ll always be her brother. That’s why she feels safe ying with other kids.”
