    She was about to sit on the chair Eileen had pulled out when Le said, “Eileen! Don’t lose your manners. Let your grandmother have the head of the table.”


    Eileen looked at the chair. She knew that in wealthy families, table manners were a big deal, and where one sat mattered.


    But she had thought this was just a casual family dinner, so she hadn’t considered it much.


    “It’s always important! You need to show respect to your elders,” Le said. She then pulled out the chair at the head of the table. “Ste, sit here.”


    Ste remained quiet for a few moments, feeling slightly uneasy, but she still made her way to the main seat and sat down.


    “You two are from the Dawson family. Ruby and I are just here to enjoy the gathering, so we’ll sit somewhere else,” Le said, giving Ruby a meaningful nce. Ruby chose a seat near the kitchen, which would make it easier for her to fetch things.


    Bryan came out of the kitchen with a pot of soup. Hearing what Le said, he was about to speak when Eileen gently tugged at his sleeve.


    She subtly shook her head at Bryan, and he quietly ced the soup on the table before taking a seat.


    Le said, “Ste, give this a try and see how it tastes. The soup here is amazing. Bryan’s cooking skills are outstanding. Even a top chef from Alverton might not be able to prepare something this good.”


    With Le’s continuous ttery, Ste started to feel increasingly ufortable.


    She gripped her fork for a while but didn’t pick up any food.

    The lunch earlier had been formal, but it was nothing like this.


    “I remember Eileen mentioned you like fish. Here,” Le said, selecting the most tender piece of fish and cing it on Ste’s te.


    Ste instinctively leaned back in her seat and replied, “Thank you. You really don’t need to keep serving me. Please, enjoy your meal.”


    “Alright,” Le smiled, then began eating.


    The atmosphere at the dinner table felt odd. Even Ruby, who was busy tending to Gabri while she ate, sensed that something wasn’t right.


    With Christmas Eveing up tomorrow and an early start needed, Eileen didn’t have time to ask Le about her ns. After dinner, she took Gabri upstairs to put her to bed.


    Ste kept reminding her about things, saying, “Tomorrow, make sure you’re up by six at thetest to prepare the treats. It’s been our tradition for many years…” Ste had given Eileen these specific instructions before Eileen headed upstairs.


    So, before heading to bed, Eileen set her rm for half past five in the morning.


    However, when the rm went off, Bryan immediately turned it off, leaned over, and kissed Eileen on the cheek. Then, he quietly got out of bed and went downstairs to help.


    The Dawson family’s servants were already on holiday this time of year. Ste always took care of the tasks herself.


    Bryan had no idea what to do, and Le and Ruby were no help, either. Le and Ruby had gotten up early but just sat in the dining room, staring at each other. Ste sat in a chair, resting with her eyes closed, seeming like she was waiting for something.
