    “When did you buy this apartment?” Eileen asked.


    This question startled Judie, and there was a hint of panic in her eyes. She quicklyposed herself and said, “I didn’t buy this apartment. It’s rented. Who told you I bought it?”


    “I thought you did. It seems I was wrong,” Eileen said with a smile.


    “It is rented. I couldn’t afford to buy such a ce. I rented it because it wasn’t convenient to stay in that small ce after the child was born. Since we hired a nanny, I decided to rent this ce temporarily. It has the added bonus of being close to your ce,” Judie exined.


    It seemed like Judie was trying to show off.


    Roderick soon returned with the coffee and fruit for Eileen.


    Denise followed close behind, making thinly veiledments about how only a son could be relied on. Her remarks were clearly aimed at Eileen.


    Roderick, visibly frustrated by Denise’s words, quickly changed the subject. “The baby doesn’t have a name yet, Eileen. I was hoping you could give me some suggestions.”

    She spoke briefly with Bryan, informing him that she was at Roderick’s ce. Once she confirmed that Bryan was home, she ended the call decisively and prepared to leave.


    “I want you to stay for dinner,” Roderick said, following her all the way to her car.


    “There will be plenty of opportunities for us to dine together in the future. We’ll have a meal together another time,” Eileen responded after getting into her car. She then started the engine and drove away.


    Back in the room on the second floor, just after Eileen and Roderick had left, Judie vented her frustration on Denise.


    “What did you tell Eileen?” Judie asked.


    Denise shook her head vigorously in denial. “I didn’t say anything.”


    Judie rose from the bed and pushed Denise toward the baby. “If you said nothing, how did Eileen find out this apartment was bought?”


    “I just mentioned that she wouldn’t expect us to live here. I didn’t say anything about buying the apartment!” Denise replied, starting to panic.


    “Really useless. Eileen is observant. She instantly figured out your schemes. Why did you say so much? If she finds out how we bought this apartment, there will be serious consequences!” In a burst of anger, Judie fiercely scolded Denise.
