    Eileen replied yfully, “I could use a few more men. Would you get some for me?”


    “Eileen!” Bryan eximed, his grip on Gabri not preventing him from swiftly pulling Eileen into a hug.


    Gabri and Eileen nestled against Bryan’s chest. One hadrge, sparkling eyes, while the other’s clear gaze held a mischievous glint.


    The three of them spent time on the carpet,ughing and ying until Ruby returned from visiting Bailee.


    “Everyone’s talking about your news,” Ruby said, starting to make dinner with Eileen’s help. “Bailee mentioned that people at the educational center were wondering if the ‘Ms. Curtis’ she referred to was you.”


    Eileen hadn’t been to the educational center much since returning to Onnd, so there was some uncertainty about her identity there.


    “How’s Bailee doing?” Eileen asked, as she hadn’t received a response to herst message and hadn’t had the chance to follow up on their previous conversation.


    Ruby sighed. “She mentioned… Huey’s caught up in apetition. She’s having trouble reaching him.”


    This wasn’t entirely an excuse; Bailee knew Huey was involved in apetition. But she hadn’t brought up the events of that night to Ruby, especially since she hadn’t seen Huey return and was unclear about what had happened.


    Just then, Bryan’s phone rang. Eileen took Gabri from him, allowing him to go upstairs to take the call.


    The study was dimly lit, with only the moonlight providing some illumination. Positioned by the window, Bryan swiped to answer the call, and Josue’s teasing voice echoed.


    “If I congratte you now, you won’t think I’m mocking you for marrying into the Curtis family, will you?”

    “No, I won’t,” Bryan replied, leaning against the desk with aposed expression. “What’s thetest on that investigation you were handling? It’s been a while.”


    “Of course, I’ve found something. Otherwise, you might think I’m just calling to congratte you on stealing my goddaughter.” Josue chuckled briefly before his tone turned serious. “The situation with Travis’ father is moreplex than we expected. Leads go overseas and then just disappear.”


    Bryan frowned, listening intently. “Is that all?”


    Josue quickly responded, “No. I’m skilled at digging deep. It was challenging, but I uncovered a few things. Travis’ father is someone who operates from the shadows. I suspect he’s trying to use the Dawson family to clean up his son’s background, since he can’t stay hidden forever.”


    Josue wasn’t an expert in these matters, but he had solid connections. He had no hesitation in reaching out to his ex-wife’s brother, who was involved in the underground scene, to gather intelligence.


    “With Brandon ousted from the Dawson family, their schemes have hit a snag, and their connections to you are severed,” Josue added. “The man will likely seek out another family to exploit, though it’s uncertain how vindictive he might be…”
