Chapter 8: Running and Running


    The knocks on the door get louder..


    I hear some more hard knocks on the door.


    I slowly roll off the couch and crawl towards the window. "Shoot!" There''s police cars covering the


    street.


    I hear an officer yell something through the door. I see the locks on the door start to shake as the


    knocks turn into kicks. I take a deep breath and run up the stairs.


    "Den! Wake the up!" I jump on him and shake him fast.


    "Need a diaper chang-" He goes tough when I pull him off the bed. "Screw you! Cops are here!" His


    face drops and he slips on his shoes.


    We start making our way down the stairs and out the back door. We bolt. We hear footsteps and I run


    faster,


    "LANDON RUN!"


    I hear Den scream behind me.


    "Den!" I can see him being tackled and handcuffed from the corner of my eye.


    I jump the fence and head to the woods. Lucky for me Den lives right behind an abandoned


    yground. It''s all tall grass, over grown trees and vines. We used to practically live here when we


    were kids.


    Some how when we grew up, so did the park, no one kept up with it. We were thest kids in the


    neighborhood for a while, so now it''s just a memory.


    I run through broken branches and feel my legs getting cut up by thorns, I hide inside a broken tree


    trunk to catch my breath. I close my eyes and hope it''s a dream. I got to go back and help Dec, but


    how? I hear the crunching of old leaves and branches in a distant. No. They really followed me in here?


    I''m just trying to go home, I''m not some murderer. I close my eyes tight when I hear the footsteps

    *beep beep beep*


    My phones low battery warning starts to go off. "Shut up please shut up." I take my phone out and


    press the speaker against my chest, hoping to muffle the beeps.


    "Wait what was that noise?" I hear a man whisper to someone else. They walk closer and I can already


    feel my hands being ced in cuffs. I hold my breath and slowly take out my battery.


    "Let''s head back, well call in a copter."


    I hear the footsteps lessen and now all I hear is faint sirens and crickets. I let out a deep breath and


    slowly lean up.


    "That was so close." I slowly get up and make my way to the back of the woods.


    I climb over thest fence and I jump down behind a building. It''s pitch ck and I can''t ce where I


    am. I start to walk towards the white bricks and turn the corner. I look up and smile when I realize


    where I am.


    "Ah high school." Mason and I used to cut ss freshman and sophmore year, we''d walk towards the


    park and eat lunch. It was only a short bit of woods back then.


    We stopped the middle of sophomore year when they found that body. I guess that''s when everyone


    stopped going there actually, it was too eerie, sneaking out now would take forever.


    I notice an open window and climb inside. I jump down and fall into the gymnasium. I let out a groan


    from pain. I forgot what a long fall that was.


    I get up and rub my back when I hear footsteps. Really? Am I safe no where?

    "Landon?!" I go to run when I look up and see..


    Mason?


    "Nice n asshole, you forgot about the rms!" He rubs his arm nervously and blushes.


    "Well uh oops?" I punch his shoulder.


    "OOPS?! You got Den arrested and now I''m a runaway!" He covers my mouth and tells me to lower


    my voice.


    "Look man I''m sorry okay? I didn''t think it through!"

    He grabs my shirt and pushes me down.


    "Landon be quiet I''m serious!" I close my mouth and he pulls me underneath the bleachers.


    "They know I tried to help you okay? They''re looking for me too, I don''t know how but they figured it


    out." Iy my head back and sigh.


    "I hate Kaylee, why is she doing this?"


    He shakes his head and smiles. "Pretty funny how we picked the same ce to hide huh?"


    I narrow my eyebrows at him but smile.


    "Yeah, best friends think alike."


    We sit there in silence for a bit, before I know it were both asleep, all that running and adrenaline can


    really tucker you out.


    After a while I jump up when I hear a noise. I shake Mason awake and tell him to listen.


    "What time is it? Are they opening up for school?"


    He looks down at his watch. "It''s only 4? Plus it''s Sunday." I sink further behind the bleachers.


    "They found us! Were dead!"


    I cover Mason''s mouth and hold it tight.


    "Ohhh baby boys!" I hear a voice. It sounds like Kaylee.


    My heart begins to beat out of my chest.


    How''d she find us? Mason starts breathing heavy and freezes.


    "My phone! My phones locations on!"


    "Mason you idio-"


    "There you are!"


    Kaylee and Cindy pull us out by our shirts.


    "Really Mason?" Cindy grabs his ear and pulls him away. "I guess someone needs a mommy too huh?"


    Cindy smiles and pulls Mason out of the gym.


    "Baby I was so worried about you!"


    Kaylee picks me up and I try to pull away.


    "I guess well have to up the security don''t we?" She winks and carries me out the door following Mason


    and Cindy.


    "What..what did you do to him?!" I look and see Mason passed out in the hallway. "The same thing
