Chapter 432

Inside the police interrogation room, everything felt tense and too quiet. Bailey was lying on the floor while the paramedics worked fast, loosening his tie and cor, turning his head to the side, and fitting an oxygen mask over his face.

Hiswyer stood nearby, pletely at a loss, sweat running down his face as he watched.

"Mr. Meyer..." Roman''s eyes were locked on Bailey''s chest as it rose and fell in quick, uneven bursts. His gut twisted with the sense that something was seriously wrong.

"Heart rate''s dropping. Get the defibritor ready."

The lead paramedic pped on the electrode pads without missing a beat, staring hard at the monitor.

    "Charging. 360 joules. Clear."

There was a heavy thump as the shock hit Bailey. His body jerked upward, almost like some invisible force had yanked him, then he crashed back down. On the monitor, the green line barely fluttered, nearly t. Each tiny spike was thinner than a strand of hair, and it was obvious how fast his life was slipping away.

    "Again."

No hesitation. The paramedic hit the button for a second shock. Bailey''s arms and legs twitched uncontrobly. His eyes rolled back, a cloudy film covering them as his awareness faded.

    "This isn''t good."

An officer grabbed the phone right away.

"Hello? Command center? We have a suspect with a heart attack in the

interrogation room. It''s urgent. We need more medical help, right now."

"The address is West District Police Station, third floor, interrogation building, room 302."

    ...

Outside, Reese stepped through the station doors into the cold wind. Thete autumn air stung her cheeks and made her pull her coat tighter around her. Just then, an ambnce raced by, the shing lights blurring red and blue across her vision.

The siren was sharp and loud, almost like it cut straight into her chest. Reese''s heart started pounding, a weird panic crawling up her spine. She nced back at the building. The ambnce had stopped at the entrance, and she watched as paramedics rushed inside with a stretcher and emergency kit.

She stayed by the door, not moving, staring after them. Matthew noticed and got out of his car, walking over to her. He gently ced a shawl over her shoulders.

    "You okay?"

“I''m fine.” Reese shook her head. “I just... suddenly feel really anxious.”

Her phone rang before she could say more. Roman''s name shed on the screen. Her brow furrowed and the unease in her chest grew stronger.

    "Ms. Meyer, your father..."

Roman hesitated, thinking about everything Bailey had done. "Mr. Meyer had a heart attack during questioning. He''s getting emergency treatment now. Do you want to

A flicker of surprise crossed Reese''s face. Her fingers tightened around her phone until her knuckles turned pale.

She turned and looked at the ambnce parked in the courtyard. After a long pause, she finally said, "No, it''s alright. I''ll let Hank know."

    "...Okay."

Roman didn''t try to change her mind.

Matthew saw how pale she was and asked, "What happened?"

Reese took a slow, steady breath, pushing her emotions down. “Bailey had a heart attack. They''re trying to save him. Can you call Hank for me? Ask him toe."

Matthew seemed surprised for a second but didn''t argue. He just nodded and pulled out his phone.

Reese stayed at the entrance, staring up at the building. She counted the floors, trying to guess which window belonged to the interrogation room.

She already knew it was over for Bailey the moment she handed Roman what she''d found in the metal box. When Roman caffed earlier and told her Bailey would only confess if she came, she''d actually felt a bit impatient.

She hadn''te to see Bailey out of love or loyalty. She''de for the truth, so the investigation could finally be finished and so hermother could test in peace.
