Chapter 523

    "Yeah," Yvonne nodded.

Bet took her hand and led her out of the auditorium.

As Bet guided her away, Yvonne instinctively nced back to see Mr. Walker sitting among the leadership, ughing and chatting animatedly.

The image seared itself into her mind, sharp and painful, before slowly blurring.

Bet held her hand all the way out of the police academy gates.

It seemed this trip to her alma mater had not been a pleasant one.

On the way back, Yvonne sat in the passenger seat, silent and brooding.

"What''s wrong? Why the long face?" Bet asked with concern as the car entered a less congested stretch of road. He kept one hand on the steering wheel and used the other to hold hers.

Yvonne turned to him, hesitating for a moment before her lips parted. Her voice was slightly hoarse. "I know how I died in my past life."

Bet''s brow furrowed, his eyes darkening instantly. "Was it April?" he asked, his voice low.

Yvonne nodded, a heavy sorrow clouding her features.

"Before Colin was arrested, he once had a whim to take me to meet a friend. We waited at a private club for over two hours, but the person never showed. Later, Colin got a call saying his friend wasn''ting, so he lost interest and took me home."

She paused before continuing, "The person Colin wanted me to meet that day must have been Vincent. Since Colin was bringing me, his mistress, Mr. Walker naturally wouldn''t have brought Mrs. Walker. He must have brought April. She recognized me, and that''s why they left in a hurry."

"Today, I overheard a conversation between Mr. Lee and April. April, acting as my former mentor, repeatedly probed Mr. Lee about me. He eventually hinted that my withdrawal from school was for a mission. Given how sharp and observant April is, she would have figured out I was undercover with Colin."

So, right after she had sent Colin to prison and had just begun her investigation into the Spencer Group, she was silenced.

At the time, she''d almost blown her cover protecting Sandra, so until the moment she died, Yvonne never knew she was betrayed and killed by the mentor she once respected most.

Yvonne had been chosen for the undercover mission, and she had been meticulously careful while embedded with Colin. She couldn''t afford to get hurt, and she certainly didn''t want to die. She wanted toplete her mission alive too home, to see her family and the man she loved again.

But in the end, she never lived to see that reunion.

    go

As Yvonne finished speaking, Bet mmed on the brakes, the car screeching to

a halt with a sound of tortured rubber.

If the road hadn''t been nearly empty, it would have surely caused a rear-end collision.

"Ben." Yvonne''s body lurched forward. After steadying herself, she turned to the man beside her.

Bet''s hands were gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white, and his eyes were bloodshot.

He rarely lost control like this.

Undercover missions were top secret, handled by a select few, and absolute confidentiality was paramount.

That was why Yvonne had endured her parents'' misunderstanding and her lover''s resentment, why she and her family bad suffered in silence, without ever revealing a single word.

Yet Mr. Lee had so carelessly leaked an undercover officer''s information, indirectly causing her death.

And April was nothing but a disgrace to the force.

Bet pulled the car over to the side of the road so as not to obstruct traffic.

He unbuckled his seatbelt and pulled Yvonne into a fierce embrace, holding her so tightly it felt like he was trying to merge her into his very being.
