Hannah froze at his words, staring at Quennel and blinking in surprise, for a moment thinking she''d misheard.
Quennel smiled at her adorable expression. "You heard me right. She told Lionel a few days ago, and he was furious. He came to me demanding to know what was going on."
"So she''s ying games with us. She tells Lionel, then she tells me. She''s trying to make us suspect you and shift the me from herself to you, isn''t she?"
Quennel didn''t speak, just nodded with a smile. But there was no warmth in his eyes, only a simmering anger.
He couldn''t believe Sandra had gotten so bold. She''d already told one person and now had the audacity to repeat the lie. It seemed she was in a real hurry to die.
Quennel looked at Hannah. "So, you asked me here today to find out if it was true? And here I was, thinking you were just in a good mood and wanted to have coffee with me."
Hannah shook her head and quickly exined, "I didn''t believe her when she told me at the hospital today."
"Besides, Lionel was drugged that night too. It couldn''t have been you. It''s not like you were trying to set us up. And from the sound of it, she probably doesn''t know who drugged Lionel either."
Although, she admitted to herself, she had wavered for a moment, wondering if it could have been Quennel.
But the idea that he was worried about Lionel''s marriage affecting his status just didn''t hold up.
"Indeed, the whole thing is a
mystery, and it''s been three years Quennel''s movements were fluid and graceful as he prepared these coffee. He ced a cup in front of Hannah and continued.
"If he had investigated properly when it first happened, he would''ve known the truth by now. And it''s strange, isn''t it? Sandra is so obsessed with him, why would she wait until now to say something? She could I have revealed this a month ago when they tricked you into signing the divorce papers. You two would probably be divorced by now, and things wouldn''t be this messy. Her motive is very strange."
Now that Quennel put it that way, Hannah also found it extremely odd.
"And she has no proof, just using me of drugging you. Why not just say I drugged Lionel too? After all, you were both drugged that night. Wouldn''t it be easier to pin
everything on me?
Quennel took a sip of his coffee and sighed heavily, a look of weary amusement on his face as he looked at Hannah.
Hearing his analysis, Hannah felt that nothing about the situation made sense.
"Quennel, I believe you would never do something like that. And you have no
reason to do something that would harm others without benefiting yourself," Hannah said, looking up at him.
Quennel smiled. "Thank you for believing me."
"Of course I believe you, Quennel. I know what kind of person you are. Sandra is making baseless usations. With this recording alone, I can sue her."
A glint appeared in Hannah''s eyes as she added with a smile, "Even if the oue
is just a verbal apology with no real damages, at least I can add some chaos to her already messy life."
