?Chapter 1159:
Elena read the warning between the lines. He was making it clear that Torin backed Gleyross Hospital, and any move against the hospital would not be without consequences. Yet she wasn’t intimidated by threats. A faint, fearless smile yed at her lips. “So, where is the body?”
Dewayne’s expression darkened, caught off guard by her refusal to back down. It was clear she had every intention of seeing the body, and his polite fa?ade vanished, reced by a cold, hard stare. “The body’s already been cremated. If you really want, I can have the ashes brought in.”
“Cremated?” Elena asked coldly.
Only three days had passed since the patient’s death, and the hospital had already cremated the body without permission. Anyone with half a brain could tell something was wrong. And Dewayne didn’t bother to make up a usible excuse.
Elena’s gaze drilled into Dewayne, who had now dropped all politeness and red back at her with open hostility. His smile had twisted into something menacing. “Healer, you’d be wise to stay out of matters that have nothing to do with you. Those who meddle tend to meet… unfortunate ends. You’re from Houis, aren’t you? Why risk everything in a foreign country for people who mean nothing to you?”
It was a threat, in and simple. But Elena held her ground. Just because she couldn’t bring Torin down right now did not mean she was powerless. “And the operating room’s surveince footage? Are you telling me that’s gone too?” she asked.
Dewayne nodded, his voice dripping with feigned sincerity. “As a matter of fact, yes. There was an electrical failure that day, and the storage card got damaged. If you’d like, I can show you.”
He was stubborn to the core, resorting to outright lies just to block the investigation.
A derisive smile tugged at Elena’s lips. Did he really believe such petty tricks would stop her? Bodies and footage could be destroyed, but the hospital staff from the surgery that day were still around. “Bring in everyone who was present in the operating room that day,” she instructed, her tone leaving no room for argument.
Dewayne remained unfazed, his expression stillposed. He had seen thising and had already made arrangements.
Momentster, a group of doctors and nurses filed into the office, led by a middle-aged man in a white coat who immediately startedining. “We’re all swamped. Why drag us here? Got nothing better to do? I’m about to head out for a consultation. Ask your questions fast, or I’m out of here.” He sent a re in Elena’s direction.
???????????????? ?????????????? ???? ?????????????????﹒?????
Elena sat back in a leather chair, eyeing the group with a steady calm. She then gestured for Dewayne to step outside.
Dewayne exchanged a loaded nce with the group before leaving the room. As Elena had suspected, no matter what she asked, they all imed to remember nothing. She didn’t lose her patience. Instead, she kept her questions brief, working methodically through the group until she came to thest one.
Standing at the far end, a young man kept his head down, his bangs hiding his face, saying nothing.
Elena’s eyes lingered on his battered shoes and the threadbare pants that looked as if they’d been washed and worn far too many times. Something about him caught her attention.
Once the others left, the quiet stretched between her and the young man. His demeanor waspletely out of ce in such an environment.
Elena casually asked, “What’s your name?”
He kept his eyes down. “Lyle Guerrero.”
