    Having juste up with a usible excuse for Jeffry’s refusal, Evelyn found herself caught off guard by her father’s question. She faltered, stumbling over her own words.


    Her silence gave Jerry all the confirmation he needed. Her marriage to Jeffry was nothing more than a formality.


    Jerry’s voice cut through the air, filled with anger. “Head straight to the Harper estate. Immediately!”


    Stunned into silence, Evelyn could hardly process how her father had uncovered her business deal with Jeffry under the pretense of marriage. She had been careful to keep every detail of her agreement with Jeffry hidden, certain that her parents would be furious if they ever found out.


    Hanging up the call with her nerves fraying, Evelyn reluctantly made her way to the Harper family’s home. Already close to the gates of Hillside Manor, it took only a few minutes before she found herself at the front doors of the Harper family mansion.


    Stepping inside, Evelyn saw Jolie seated quietly off to one side, her features set and clouded.


    On a sofa nearby, Jerry and Aria sat side by side, anger radiating from both, theirplexions pale with outrage.


    Moving into the hall with care, Evelyn’s greeting was barely above a whisper. “Dad, Mom…”


    A sharp, cold snort came from Jerry. “You’ve got a lot of nerve! A business deal under the pretense of marriage? You and Jeffry have fooled everyone! You kept something this grand from me. Is that all the respect you have for your father?”


    Unease tugged at Evelyn’s heart, and she kept her head down, swallowing any words that rose to her lips.


    In a rush, Aria hurried over and seized Evelyn’s hand, gripping it as if Evelyn might bolt. “Evelyn, I want the truth. Was a business agreement everything that defined your rtionship with Jeffry?”


    Even now, Aria couldn’t ept that her daughter had made such a reckless choice.


    “Mom…” Uncertainty flickered in Evelyn’s eyes as she nced at Jerry, her words trembling. “It’s true… Jeffry and I merely struck a business deal.”

    Frustration boiling over, Aria’s voice shook as she questioned, “What on earth did you hope to gain by doing that? There are countless outstanding men you could have married, yet you chose to go through with the formality merely for a business…”


    “Deal! And to make matters worse, you agreed to walk away without a cent? Have you lost all sense of reason?”


    If Evelyn had at least walked away from Jeffry with a fortune after the divorce, Aria might have begrudgingly epted it. But in the end, Evelyn received nothing, left with only thebel of a divorcee. No matter how she looked at it, the deal was an utter failure.


    A hand pressed to her heart, Aria swayed as if the stress might make her copse.


    Above it all, Elena leaned casually over the upstairs railing, finding the Morgan family’s drama far too entertaining to miss. Earlier, she’d thought about stepping in when Jerry and Aria pressured Jolie, but Jolie’s calm refusal to the Morgan couple’s outrageous request had kept her in the background for now. The Morgan family came under the pretense of apologizing to ask for money, but after this debacle, they lost even that flimsy excuse they’d used.
