    The moment Evelyn walked through the front door, Jerry had been pressuring her to beg Jeffry for another chance.

    Unable to hide it any longer, Jerry finally revealed the gravity of the situation, his tone heavy. “Thepany’s on the brink of copse. Without help from the Harper family, we’re finished.”


    “What?” Aria eximed, her anger reced by fear. “Thepany was stable just weeks ago. What happened?”


    Jerry looked as if he’d aged a decade in a matter of days, his hair streaked with fresh gray. “A few days ago, hackers hit thepany out of nowhere. We lost tens of billions overnight, our cash flow is gone, and every day the hole just gets deeper. We’re hanging by a thread.”


    Panic flickered across Aria’s face. “But can’t we just take out a loan from the bank?”


    “Do you think I haven’t tried?” Jerry replied, his toneced with frustration. “Not a single bank is willing to lend to Morgan Group. They all say the risk is too high.”


    Aria said angrily, “Those banks are all talk! When we didn’t need the money, they wouldn’t stop pushing loans. But now that we’re desperate, suddenly no one will help. What good are banks, anyway?”


    Jerry slumped, the weight of it all pressing down. “Comining isn’t going to get us anywhere.”


    For once, Aria had noeback. Her earlier support for Evelyn’s divorce faded into uneasy silence. After a long pause, she turned toward her daughter, her voice barely above a whisper. “Evelyn, maybe you should reach out to Jeffry again. Even though you’re separated, he might still feel something for you. The Harper family wouldn’t blink at lending us tens of billions.”


    Evelyn’s brow furrowed. “Mom, how could even you suggest that?”


    Aria hated the idea of her daughter begging Jeffry for help, but if the Morgan Group copsed, they’d lose Hillside Manor and be the talk of the for all the wrong reasons. Theirfortable lives would vanish, and they’d be left depending on the pity of others. With Matias still finishing his degree, she couldn’t ignore what losing everything would mean for his future as well.

    With no other options, Evelyn swallowed her pride and agreed to give it another try to beg Jeffry, even as reluctance settled in her chest.


    The next morning, Evelyn went to Jeffry’s office, only to find out he wasn’t in.


    Word was he’d gone over to the children’s welfare center, so she rerouted and made her way there instead.
