Chapter 1070:
Elena gave Jolie’s hand a reassuring squeeze. “Jeffry never acts without thinking things through. I’m sure he’ll handle this neatly.”
Jolie shook her head, her disappointment clear. “If he’d really thought things through, he wouldn’t have gone through with this loveless marriage. I can’t believe I was fooled.”
Jolie couldn’t shake the feeling that her own actions had pushed Jeffry into rushing into a marriage with Evelyn. She looked at Elena, regret heavy in her eyes. “Did I mess up? If I hadn’t pushed him for marriage, maybe none of this would have happened.”
Elena gave her hand aforting pat. “You did what you thought was best, Mom. Please, don’t me yourself.”
Jolie let out a weary sigh, feeling the weight of the entire situation pressing down on her.
Seeing the strain on Jolie’s face, Elena quietly led her upstairs so she could rest.
Meanwhile, Evelyn stood frozen, still reeling from everything that had just happened.
Jeffry didn’t beat around the bush. His tone was icy and matter-of-fact. “Tomorrow morning we’ll go to the courthouse and finalize the divorce.”
Evelyn finally snapped back to reality, clinging to a fragile hope as she asked, “What if I apologize to Elena? Could we move past this?”
Jeffry didn’t bother to reply, his cold stare giving her all the answer she needed. Evelyn finally realized he was dead set on getting rid of her. Tears welled up, her teeth gritted, and she demanded, “Are you divorcing me for Elena or for that homewrecker Lydia?”
She knew the truth, or so she believed. Jeffry wanted his freedom so he could be with Lydia out in the open. But how could he do this to her? She had loved him fiercely and fought so hard to marry him, only to lose everything to a homewrecker.
Evelyn’s thoughts spun in circles, her obsession with Jeffry growing by the second. The idea of him loving someone else was unbearable.
Jeffry didn’t bother wasting words with her. He shot her a cool nce, then turned and walked upstairs.
As Jeffry disappeared upstairs, Evelyn stood rooted in ce, her bitterness and obsession simmering just beneath the surface.

By the time Evelyn stepped outside the next morning, Jeffry’s car was already waiting at the curb. She caught sight of it and instinctively quickened her pace, pretending not to notice. Sleep had eluded her entirely. All through the night, she had wrestled with one desperate thought after another, trying to figure out how to avoid the divorce. But even as daylight came, she hadn’te up with a n.
“Stop and turn around.” Jeffry’s voice cut through the quiet morning. “Get in the car.”
Evelyn came to a halt, spine rigid. She didn’t continue walking, but neither did she turn around. She clung to the illusion that if she stalled long enough by not turning around, then maybe she could avoid going to the courthouse to finalize the divorce.
She had loved Jeffry for so long. To win him over, she’d yed every card she had—pleasing Jolie, making frequent visits to Jeffry’s office, and finding reasons to be around him. Piece by piece, she had carved out her chance. She had always carried an unwavering belief that she and Jeffry were destined to be together. His indifference, she told herself, was only a trial—some divine challenge they had to ovee. Eventually, he woulde to love her too.
But none of that ever happened. Even after their marriage, he kept his distance and didn’t reciprocate her feelings. He shut her outpletely, never letting her take even a single step closer. She couldn’t make sense of how things had fallen apart like this. Was it really all because she had insulted Elena? It hadn’t even been a big deal. It wasn’t like Elena had been physically hurt. And what she’d said about Elena wasn’t wrong.
