Chapter 1067

    ?Chapter 1067:

Suddenly, a sharp knock broke the spell. Arion’s voice called out, unaware. “Mr. Spencer, the investigators have arrived.”

Tension shot through Wesley’s jaw. For a split second, he wanted nothing more than to forget the world and lose himself in Elena.

Elena pushed him aside, her lips kiss-bruised, her breath shaky. “There’s someone outside,” she warned.

Wesley reached for her and murmured, “Let them wait.”

Determination shed in Elena’s eyes as she put a hand against his chest. “We can’t. There’s work to do.”

Giving him a gentle shove, she slid off the desk and straightened her ruffled clothes.

Wesley nced down at his own disheveled shirt and let out a grumble of pure frustration. Stopping now felt unbearable, but his respect for her ran deeper than his desire. He gathered himself, squared his shoulders, and finally went to answer the door.

Arion had just raised his hand to knock again when the door swung open, revealing Wesley’s face—dark and clearly annoyed.

Arion froze, hand still midair. “Mr. Spencer, the investigators are here.”

A cold re from Wesley shut him up. “I heard you the first time,” he said, his voice chilly.

When Elena stepped out behind Wesley, it all clicked for Arion—he’d walked right into an awkward situation.

Not that Arion had much choice. The investigators had insisted.

Wesley didn’t bother to hide his impatience. “Why are you standing there like a statue? Move it.”

Arion blinked and hurried to catch up.

A cab whisked Elena away from the Spencer Group headquarters, and soon she arrived at the familiar gates of the Harper estate.

Inside the room, Jolie and Evelyn busied themselves by arranging fresh flowers, carefully cing each stem to brighten the space.

At the sight of Elena, Jolie’s whole face brightened. She set the bouquet aside and had a servant bring out a steaming bowl of nourishing soup.

“How long will you be staying this time, Elena?” Jolie asked, her tone as soft as a favorite nket.

“It could be a while,” Elena replied. “I won’t be going back to the base anytime soon.”

Concern crept into Jolie’s features. “Your work wrapped up? You look exhausted—have you been skipping meals again? Just rest while you’re under this roof.”

Across the room, Evelyn smirked. “Jolie, didn’t you catch the headlines? The Spencer Group is in hot water with the authorities.”

A deep frown etched itself on Jolie’s face. “And what does any of that have to do with Elena?”

Evelyn tossed her hair and replied, sharp as ss, “The Spencer Group’s up to its neck in trouble with the government over national interests, and she’s attached to…”

“Wesley at the hip. Of course, the institute doesn’t want her around.”

Nothing about Evelyn’s words was gentle, and Jolie’s displeasure was obvious. Still, with Evelyn newly married to Jeffry—and Jeffry rarelying home—Jolie swallowed her frustration and let thement slide.

Jolie faced Elena with a smile. “It’s fine if you don’t go back. No matter what, you’ll always have a ce here.”
