Chapter 980:
“I understand,” I said, a quiet rity settling over me.
But Maia’s agitation red once more as she seized my hand, her voice urgent. “So you’re not Ailyn, but Makenna? What hardships have you endured all these years? How did you end up ensnared as a sex ve of the Lycan princes?”
Her gaze then shifted to Jett, brimming with desperate sincerity. “And you—where did you vanish to when the Saint was lost to us? Why haven’t you contacted us all this time?”
Makenna’s POV:
A soft breeze drifted through the garden, carrying the subtle fragrance of blossoms into the air around us.
Seated opposite Maia, Jett and I recounted the trials of recent years, holding nothing back. As our tales unfolded, Maia’s eyes grew misty, her features shadowed with remorse and sorrow. Silent tears traced paths down her face.
“It’s all my fault. If only I had seen it earlier… if only I could have done more…” she whispered, her words fracturing under the weight of her grief.
“Don’t dwell on it. That’s all behind us now,” I offered gently, hoping to lighten the heaviness in her heart.
At that moment, a servant approached, rying that Dayton required Maia’s presence. With a reluctant sigh, she stood and followed the servant away. I chuckled inwardly, imagining that without Dayton’s interruption, Maia might have kept us there sharing stories until the sun rose.
After parting ways with her, Jett and I strolled out of the garden. Stepping indoors, I felt a parched roughness in my throat, as if it had turned to sand. Hastening to a nearby table, I filled a ss with water and drank it in one swift motion, the cool liquid easing my scratchy voice.
Jett observed me, a faint smile tugging at his lips, and asked in a tender tone, “Are you happy?”

I nodded enthusiastically, a rush of uncontainable happiness bubbling up inside me. “Yes, absolutely! I’m certain now that I’m not on my own. With you, Maia, and others supporting me, I know we can bring justice for my parents and those fallen n members!”
At my words, Jett’s gaze softened, and he reached out to tousle my hair fondly, his voice warm. “Makenna, you’ve never been alone. I’ll stand with you until we see this through.”
For a heartbeat, I froze, caught off guard as Jett seemed to realize his hand still lingered on my head, brushing my skin. He yanked it back as though burned, fumbling. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…”
Heat crept up my face, my pulse racing. I ducked my head, mumbling, “It’s… it’s fine.”
A charged stillness settled over the room, punctuated only by the rhythm of our breaths. The quiet gnawed at me, my heartbeat thudding louder in my chest.
Desperate to dispel the tension, I pivoted to a new topic, my voice tinged with wistfulness. “It’s too bad Mrs. Pierce was so young back then and didn’t know about the white wolves’ training or how to harness their special abilities. The Saint’s way of channeling her power was so intricate—it’s a puzzle we might only solve by tracking down the elder white wolves.”
Jett, picking up on the shift, nodded in agreement. “Still, we’re making strides. It won’t be long before we can venture into the werewolf forest.”
“Exactly!” My eyes sparkled with excitement as I nodded eagerly. “I’m so eager to explore the werewolf forest soon. Maybe we’ll uncover some answers there.” Our conversation tapered off, and that familiar awkwardness crept back into the silence.
