Chapter 1048

    ?Chapter 1048:

“Sorry, I’ll exin this to El,” Kaiden said, appreciating Baylee’s protective stance toward Ellie, though he ignored the sharpness in her tone.

“Exin what, exactly?” Bayleeughed bitterly. “Are you going to tell her why you were apanying your former me to the hospital in the dead of night, leaving your blind wife toe here alone? Kaiden, you’re really a bastard.”

No matter Kaiden’s reasons, they weren’t enough to calm Baylee’s fury. The memory of Ellie’s fragile, fearful demeanor only added to her anger.

Harry didn’t even look at Kaiden.

This wasn’t the first time something like this had happened.

As Ellie’s best friend and the godmother of her child, Baylee took a deep breath to steady herself.

She then ryed the crucial information. “El’s diagnosis is a threatened miscarriage. She needsplete bed rest for the next two weeks. After that, the doctor will reassess her condition and decide on the next steps.”

Kaiden nodded, his gratitude clear. “Thank you.”

Baylee hesitated, wanting to say more but holding herself back.

This was between Ellie and Kaiden, and she knew it wasn’t her ce to get involved any further.

She sighed. “El just fell asleep. You can go in and be with her.”

Ellie hadn’t expressed any desire to avoid Kaiden, so Baylee allowed him to pass, though her face remained stern. Kaiden thanked her again as he entered.

With dawn approaching, Baylee decided to get breakfast for Ellie. Harry joined her, his voice low. “Miss Curtis, Mr. Lambert and his family received the news and are on their way.” Baylee sighed in relief. “It’s about time.”

Ellie’s blindness had been kept a secret from the Lamberts, which exined their ignorance. However, Ellie hadn’t concealed her hospital visit this time, and it was only natural for someone to have informed the Lambert family about herte-night admission.

Inside the room, Elliey on the bed with her eyes closed, her lips pale and her face even more delicate. Her slender hands rested gently on her swollen belly, a single IV drip piercing her left hand. Her frail appearance tugged at the heartstrings of anyone who nced her way.

Kaiden’s mind raced with the echoes of Baylee’s words. Ellie had reached out to him first when she felt unwell, but he hadn’t been there. She had taken matters into her own hands, arranging to be taken to the hospital, only for him to arrive once the danger had subsided. Kaiden felt as if his heart was being torn apart. He wanted to p himself.

He sat by the bed, reaching for her hand. Ellie pulled her hand back under the nket, a silent rebuff that spoke volumes.

Kaiden’s heart trembled. To show she wasn’t asleep, Ellie slowly opened her eyes—eyes that could no longer see the world around her.

“I’m sorry, baby.” Kaiden firmly sped her hand as ity under the nket, his fingers tightening around hers. He gripped her hand as if he feared she might vanish should he let go.

“How is Carole?” Ellie inquired. Her voice was calm, almost detached, as she mentioned the name of the woman Kaiden had left her at home for.

“Her right eye is removed,” Kaiden replied, his voice darkening with the weight of the news.
