?Chapter 978:
Shelton had arranged a family dinner for tonight. Initially, Baylee hadn’t nned to attend. She wasn’t keen on participating in Hill family activities until after marrying Marvin. However, Shelton had personally called her, making it hard to decline.
“Miss Curtis, Mr. Marvin Hill is upstairs discussing things with Mr. Shelton Hill in the study. You can wait for him outside there,” the servant said, showing Baylee the way to the study.
Baylee gave the servant a significant look. The instruction to “wait for him outside the study” seemed rather unnecessary. As a visitor, Baylee would have been sitting in the living room, waiting for Marvin.
Baylee had always been a bit rebellious. Now that someone had set a trap for her, she was curious to see what it was.
There was nobody else on the second floor. It was eerily quiet. The study was at the end of the hallway. Perhaps because the door was left open, the voices of people talking inside were clearly audible.
“Marvin, choosing Baylee isn’t the wisest decision. There are plenty of girls from prestigious families. Why Baylee? You’re well aware of the pros and cons. Are you really prepared to marry her?” It was Shelton speaking.
Marvin chose to remain silent instead of responding.
“Marvin, you resent my favoritism towards Quincy. You resent the neglect you endured as a child. It’s all because of Quincy, right? Are you marrying her topete with Quincy, to take what’s his?”
In the study, Marvin looked straight-faced at the old man seated there. “If that’s how you see it.” Marvin thought it was absurd. “Grandpa, based on blood rtions, I don’t think Quincy is qualified topete with me.”
“No wonder…” Shelton sighed with realization. “No wonder Baylee used to visit our house often years ago, but you never paid attention to her. Now, suddenly, you want to marry her. Marvin, you should reconsider your decision.”
“Marvin, what you’re doing isn’t fair to Baylee,” a voice Baylee recognized all too well spoke angrily. It was Quincy.
Marvin looked at Quincy with a mocking smile and asked, “Do you have any right to lecture me? How I treat her, even if it is unfair, is my concern.” Baylee felt a chill run down her spine. All she could dwell on was Marvin’s blunt deration: “How I treat her, even if it is unfair, is my concern.”

Marvin acknowledged it. From the outset, his affection for her had been driven by a desire to rival Quincy. In fact, Marvin admitted this when Shelton inquired about it. Throughout, Marvin never once refuted Shelton’s probing questions.
Baylee always wondered why Marvin, such a self-absorbed man, had suddenly approached her. Just as Shelton had mentioned, they had known each other for a long time. It seemed like a setup from the moment Marvin had first appeared before her with an idental injury.
Only, she believed in his derations of “I like you” and “I love you.”
The door of the study swung open. The moment Marvin moved forward, he froze in his tracks. Their gazes locked.
He observed the intense indifference and disdain in Baylee’s eyes, as though she had glimpsed something repulsive. Instantly, Marvin felt a surge of panic and nced incredulously at Shelton and Quincy in the study. The study door stood wide open.
This had been a trap from start to finish.
Marvin suddenly grasped the situation and anxiously called out, “Baylee…”
“Stay away from me.”
