    After a few strides, he halted and gazed at the woman standing a few meters away. In the moonlight, his features appeared especially icy.

    “Wait, Kaiden!” She tugged at his clothes, her voice trembling. “Can we talk, please?”

    Kaiden lit a cigarette. He rarely smoked now that Ellie was pregnant.


    “So you’re asking me for help?” he inquired.


    “Kaiden, you’re the only one I have!”


    The cigarette’s glow shimmered as Kaiden exhaled a plume of smoke. Carole was captivated by the allure of his strength and charm.


    “When Ellie faced mistreatment, she didn’t cry or seek help from others. Furthermore,” Kaiden said in a chillingly merciless tone, “Carole, I belong to Ellie. I’ve always been hers. From the very beginning.”


    He added, “Your business is of no concern to me.”


    Carole’splexion paled. Under Kaiden’s icy gaze, she felt as though she had been pushed off a cliff. Her final flicker of hope faded away.
