    Ellie got hold of Edwin’s contact information and gave him a call.


    “Hello?”


    Edwin’s voice was the epitome of calm.


    “Mr. Stephens, with everything that’s going on, haven’t you been bombarded by the media?”


    “I’ve turned off my work phone.” Edwin couldn’t hide the smugness in his tone.


    Ellie was at a loss for words. “And you’re not even curious about what’s happening with me? Don’t you worry I might get you into trouble?”


    Feeling a twinge of guilt, Edwin stole a nce at his tablet, flooded withments specting about his connection to Ellie.


    He couldn’t admit to her that he was secretly ttered by the rumors.


    He was certain Ellie wasn’t guilty of giarism, yet he still asked, “So, what’s going on?”


    “I didn’t copy anyone’s work. I happen to be attending a live stream tomorrow, so I can take the opportunity to clear the air. I’m sorry for replying to the messages sote. Could you apologize to Gerardo for me?”


    She had overlooked the fact that she had shared that song on her R ount. Initially, she hadn’t charged Gerardo for the song, never thinking about copyright issues.


    Ellie considered setting the record straight on Twitter immediately, but she knew that written exnations could never be as effective as speaking directly. She saw no point in engaging with people who had already made up their minds.


    Kaiden, having listened in without her noticing, stepped forward and reached for the phone after hearing her mention “Mr. Stephens.”


    Ellie handed it over, though she was quite puzzled.


    Edwin’s attempt to offerfort sounded through the speaker. “Don’t worry about it! Ellie, if you’re okay then…”

    “Then what?” Kaiden looked over at Ellie on the bed and asked.


    “She’s fine, just getting ready to sleep.”

    Edwin, caught off guard, quickly turned his tablet over. It took him a moment to realize that Kaiden couldn’t see his embarrassed gesture since this wasn’t a video call. He felt foolish for reacting as though he had something to hide.


    “Anything else you need to say?” Kaiden asked, making it clear he wanted to end the call.


    “No, no! Take care, Kaiden!” With that, Edwin ended the call and immediately began to work on squashing the rumors about him and Ellie. He shook his head at his earlier overreaction.


    After the call, Kaiden passed the phone back to Ellie and asked, “What’s going on?”


    “I shared the song I wrote for your mom with Gerardo, and now there’s talk that I copied it. But it’s not a big deal. I’ve got it under control.” Kaiden quickly pulled up Twitter on his phone.
