?Chapter 591:
Still affecting an aloof expression, Baylee epted the paper bag from him and inspected its contents. When she saw what was inside, she went pale and then turned an rming shade of red as she glowered at Marvin.
She clutched the paper bag to her chest and moved away from him. After a moment of silent fury, she couldn’t help but blurt out, “What kind of bastard are you?”
Smiling roguishly, Marvin retorted, “What kind do you like?” In other words, he could be whatever breed of bastard she liked.
Ellie eyed the paper bag curiously.
It was too small to fit any dress or coat, so what kind of clothes could it possibly contain?
From Baylee’s flushed face, Ellie surmised that she didn’t want to speak with Marvin again. Being the good friend that she was, she nudged Kaiden’s arm and urged, “Didn’t you say that you and Mr. Hill have unfinished business? Perhaps you should discuss it in the study.”
“It can wait until tomorrow. No need to rush,” Kaiden replied, reluctant to leave Ellie’s side. Why would he want to go with Marvin to the study when Ellie was out here?
“But you said you had business to discuss!” Ellie insisted, holding on to the flimsy excuse Kaiden had given earlier.
Caught off guard, Kaiden whispered fiercely in Ellie’s ear, “Mrs. Thorpe, your heart seems to have wandered off to another woman!”
Ellie blinked at him. Then a small smile curved her lips and she teased, “At least it hasn’t wandered off to another man, Mr. Thorpe. No need to be jealous!”
With a huff, Kaiden pinched Ellie’s waist, shot Marvin a nce, and headed upstairs. Determined to see their little charade through, Marvin lifted his chin and followed Kaiden to the study.
“What kind of clothes fit in such a small bag?” Ellie wondered aloud. Baylee instinctively clutched the bag’s opening tighter, as if afraid someone would see its contents.
Ellie was left speechless by Baylee’s strange behavior. Unable to help herself, Baylee nced down at the paper bag again, wishing its contents had magically transformed. But no such luck awaited her when she peeked through the paper bag’s opening. It was still the same ck and whitece material that she saw earlier. It was light and airy, scant in fabric but with a lovely design.
After a few seconds of mentally preparing herself, Baylee covered her face in resignation and leaned in to whisper to Ellie, “Underwear.”
“Under—what are we talking about?” Ellie was puzzled, wondering if she had heard correctly.
“It might’ve gotten mixed up with his stuff when he moved out…” Baylee said, her voice uncertain.
Impossible. Ellie wasn’t sure if it was an ident or not. For some reason, she thought Marvin might have taken it on purpose. It seemed like something he’d do.
But if he couldn’t use it, why keep it? Was he nning to return it now? Did he have a screw loose or something?
So, maybe it was an ident after all…
