Chapter 183

    ?Chapter 183:

Ellie finally understood what had unsettled her. It felt like a thorn piercing her heart—tolerable when unnoticed, but unbearably sharp when it became real.

The unanswered calls to Kaiden suddenly made sense.

“Ellie…” Baylee looked at her with concern.

“I’m okay.” Ellie smiled back at Baylee, but inside, it felt like something had pierced her heart.

Two secondster, Ellie muttered almost to herself, “Besides, he and I are…” The rtionship between them wasn’t typical for a married couple. She wasn’t in a position to be upset about his intimacy with another woman.

“Ladies, the ones who fought with you are gone. Do you n to spend the night in our office?” The officer looked at Ellie. “I recall your profile mentioning that you’re married. Why not ask your husband to pick you up? Youngdy, what’s your husband’s number?” He was about to make a call.

Recalling the image she had just seen, Ellie responded nkly, “No, thank you.”

    “What?”

    “He’s gone.”

“Is he also deceased?” The officer was taken aback. He assumed both women had lost their families, considering Baylee’s earlier mention of her family’s passing.

Ellie was briefly stunned. That wasn’t what she meant. She just couldn’t reach Kaiden. But thinking of the photo, she quickly nodded and replied, “Yes.” What was the difference between this kind of husband and a dead one?

Baylee silently praised Ellie. But she also thought it was cruel.

The officer tried to console Ellie, “Don’t be too disheartened, youngdy. You’re still young and beautiful. Perhaps you and your husband weren’t meant to be together.”

“Ellie! Is Ellie here? Your family is here to pick you up,” another officer announced.

Ellie and Baylee exchanged confused nces, unsure of who the neer was.

    “Who is it?” Ellie asked.

“A handsome man iming to be your husband.”

“Didn’t you mention your husband passed away?” The officer who had tried to console Ellie was stunned.

Almost simultaneously, the door to the room swung open, and Ellie felt a sharp gaze fixated on her.

Kaiden arrived in a wheelchair, d in a grey suit and a ck wool overcoat.

His hair appeared slightly tousled, perhaps from rushing or the night breeze.

With an impassive expression, Kaiden raised his eyebrows at Ellie. Sensing a nervousness creeping in, Ellie nced anxiously at Baylee and murmured, “I hope he didn’t hear my words.”

Baylee’s expression conveyed uncertainty, as if to say, “I’m not sure.”

“Mr. Thorpe, is this the woman you’re here to bail out?” the policeman asked.

Kaiden affirmed, “Yes, she’s my wife. I apologize for the trouble she caused.”
