Forget the 39

When I got to the rooftop, there were tons of people–cops, firefighters, and a bunch of guys wearing headsets doing

    God knows what.

Kira was sitting on the ledge holding Pearl, the kid’s little legs dangling in the air.

Harrison was standing nearby, looking panicked. The second he saw me, he shouted at Kira:

    “Kira, Evelyn’s here!”

“Pleasee down! Or at least give me the baby.”

“Pearl’s six years old–she’s heavy. You must be exhausted holding her. Let daddy take her, okay?”

But Kirapletely ignored him, staring at me like a damn snake–cold and venomous.

    “Evelyn, you finally showed up.”

“This is all your fault! If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be living in hell right now!”

I had no clue what she was talking about.

    Suddenly Kira lifted Pearl higher.

There was nothing but empty air beneath them. If Kira let go, Pearl would hit the ground like a pancake.

    Everyone’s faces went white.

I knew Kira was certifiably insane. I carefully stepped closer, trying to keep her calm:

“You’re right, Kira. It’s all my fault. I’m the bad guy here.”

“But Pearl’s your own flesh and blood. Please give her to Harrison…”

Before I could finish, Kira threw a USB drive at us, her eyes full of pure malice:

    “Here’s the proof.”

“Evidence that Evelyn stole your product designs.”

“Harrison, Evelyn never loved you! She only got close to you to destroy you.”

“She’s a corporate spy sent by yourpetitors!”

“How could she actually love you? I told you–I’m the only person in this world who truly loves you.”

“When I left after having Pearl, there was a reason…”

Kira bit her lip, tears welling up:

    “The truth is… I have cancer…”

She struggled with the words before finally screaming it out.

For a moment, even the wind seemed to stop.

But Kira was totally lost in her own soap opera, her voice all tragic:

“I didn’t want to be a burden, so I had to leave quietly.”

“But I never imagined that while I was sacrificing everything for you, you’d rece me with not one but TWO women…”

“Lily was bad enough–at least she only shares part of my name, so your feelings for her couldn’t be that deep.”

“But Evelyn was way over the line! You let her move into OUR home, let MY daughter call her mommy…”

Feeling everyone’s eyes on me, I had to interrupt:

“First of all, I’m nobody’s recement. I’m a therapist hired specifically to help Pearl.”

“Second, Pearl has never called me mom. She’s autistic–she hasn’t spoken a single word yet.”

“Finally, I have zero reason to steal Harrison’s business ns.”

Right then, the cop checking the USB called out: “Got it loaded.”

Everyone turned to look at theputer screen.

The footage was simple-“me” sneaking into Harrison’s home office, going straight for documents on his desk, stuffing papers under my clothes, and leaving immediately.

“You all saw that, right? It’s Evelyn–she’s a corporate spy!”

    “Arrest her ass right now!”

“Harrison, that bitch never gave a damn about you! Beat the shit out of her!”
