David looked at Joshua in confusion. “Mr. Garcia, advancing the schedule may affect Ms. Schultz.”
Joshua turned to David, his gaze dark and deep, making David feel a chill run down his spine. “Understood, Mr. Garcia. I’ll get started right away.” David turned and left the hospital room.
Joshua finally turned his gaze back to Xylia, whoy on the hospital bed.
With just over a week until the anniversary of Laurel’s passing, advancing the schedule shouldn’t cause any significant changes. He needed to find something for Connor to do. He couldn’t let him keep watching over Xylia.
Joshua gently took Xylia’s cold hand. “This time, it’s my turn to protect you.”
At midnight, Xylia finally woke up. The room was dark, only the moonlight streaming through the window illuminated the hospital room, making it feel suffocating.
“Ah!” Xylia cried out in rm, curling up and scrambling towards the wall.
Hearing her scream, Joshua hung up his phone and rushed into the room in a panic. The light flickered on, illuminating the room.
Seeing Xylia curled up on the bed, Joshua rushed over to her and grabbed her shoulders. “Xylia.”
Xylia instinctively struggled when she felt Joshua’s touch. But his grip was strong, and his warm palm held her firmly. “Xylia, it’s me. Don’t be afraid, it’s me.”
He spoke gently, offering continuous reassurances.
Xylia slowly began to regain herposure, tears clinging to her eyes. Meeting Joshua’s concerned gaze, she instinctively threw herself into his arms. “Joshua…” She cried freely, unrestrained.
Joshua embraced her, feeling a sharp pain in his chest as her sobs wracked her body. He gently patted her back and whispered, “It’s okay, it’s okay.”
Xylia cried for a long time, eventually growing drowsy in his arms.
When her sobs subsided, Joshua gently pulled away. Ignoring the dampness on his shirt, he carefully wiped away the tears from her face. “Would you like me to call the doctor to check on you?”
Xylia didn’t want to be alone in the hospital room. She looked at him with furrowed brows, her eyes filled with apprehension. She still tightly held onto his coat.
Joshua smiled softly, gently holding her hand in return. “Don’t worry, I won’t leave.”
Joshua pressed the call button by the bedside. The nurse and doctor arrived together.
The doctor instructed both the nurse and Joshua to leave the room. Joshua nced at Xylia. She didn’t react much, so he stepped outside.

When the doctor was about to ask for Joshua, she looked at the doctor with nervous eyes. “Doctor, can you wait for them toe in before you leave?”
The doctor paused for a moment, then nodded.
After the nurse entered, the doctor called Joshua outside. “Ms. Schultz’s condition is not serious, she was just startled. She should not be left alone for the time being.
“It may be difficult for you as her husband over the next couple of days, but please stay with her.” After saying this, the doctor left.
Joshua stiffened slightly, then, as if remembering something, a faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. He returned to the hospital room after the nurse left.
Xylia’splexion was still pale. She looked at Joshua, her moist eyes tinged with unease.
Joshua felt a sharp pain in his chest as he walked over and sat by the bed. “Go to sleep, I’ll stay with you.”
Hearing his words, Xylia’s heart began to calm. When no one was around, she felt unsafe.
She obedientlyy down, but as soon as her mind rxed, the physical pain hit her again. The stings from the wasps caused sharp pain with every slight movement. Xyliay back, grimacing in pain.
Joshua frowned and looked at her. “Is the wound hurting?”
Xylia shook her head.
Before Joshua could speak again, her stomach rumbled loudly. “Are you hungry?”
Xylia felt embarrassed and shook her head again.
Joshua smiled, standing up to find something to eat for her.
As soon as he moved, Xylia grasped his hand, looking rmed. “Where are you going?”
She suddenly sat up, her moist eyes wide with fear, looking helpless.
Joshua’s heart clenched painfully, overwhelmed by the heartache. The person he cherished had been hurt like
this.
He softened his expression, held her hand, and spoke gently. “I’m not leaving. I just need to call for some food to be brought here.”
“It’s toote. I don’t need to eat. I’m not hungry,” Xylia said.
Joshua smiled teasingly and said, “Do you really think I’m deaf?”
Xylia’s face flushed, embarrassed that he had noticed her stomach growling.

She had not eaten sincest night, and though she had received nutrients through an IV, her stomach still cried out. She didn’t refuse this time.
Joshua walked to the window, dialing his assistant’s number. During this time, Xylia’s gaze never left him.
He noticed her watching him, and while part of him was pleased by her reliance on him, another part ached for her.
Locked in that dark basement, betrayed and tortured with wasps. She hadn’t copsed mentally, which was already a huge ordeal.
When he finished the call, he sat down by the bedside. Noticing her distracted gaze, he tried to start a conversation. “This isn’t the first time Connor has hurt you. Will you continue to endure it?”
Xylia’s expression turned pained at the mention of Connor. She had nned to keep things civil when divorcing him, but now it seemed that Connor still treated their divorce as her nonsense.
Since he allowed Tessa to harm her, she could only make Tessa the cause of his downfall.
She shook her head and replied softly, “I’ve endured for so many years. I don’t want to anymore, and I won’t anymore.”
Joshua raised his hand and gently tidied Xylia’s slightly disheveled hair. “If you need anything, just tell me.”
Xylia was about to refuse but stopped, remembering how Joshua had stormed into Connor’s house alone to save her. She looked at him with concern.
“Did you go into Connor’s house alone? After rescuing me, did Connor give you trouble?” Xylia asked.
Joshua noticed her concern and raised an eyebrow with a slight smile. “He didn’t cause me trouble. He has more pressing issues to deal with now.”
“What do you mean?” Xylia didn’t understand.
Joshua didn’t borate. “Rest for now. I’ll let you know when the food arrives.”
Xylia didn’t press him further and obedientlyy back down.
