This wasn’t a bad idea.
After all, Megan had been threatened, and Roy also wanted to find a way to bnce things out.
He nodded and followed Chris’s lead, saying, “Listen to your chairman. You can go for now. Don’t tell anyone about today’s conversation, not even the Dr. Wood you mentioned. Do your best to stay hidden. If the culprit contacts you, call me.”
He didn’t have business cards, so he tore off a piece of paper from the desk and quickly wrote down his name and phone number, handing it to Megan.
“Find a way to call me. I’ll make sure your child is safe. Starting tomorrow, I’ll arrange for someone to keep watch near your child’s school.”
“Okay, okay, thank you, thank you so much.”
Megan’s eyes were still red.
Everything that needed to be asked had been.
Megan stood up and left.
Outside, Francesca opened the door for her, and only after she left did Chris call Francesca inside.
“What do you know about Dr. Wood, from Cardiology?”
Francesca quickly recalled Hector’s profile and answered in a straightforward manner, “Dr. Wood’s family situation is a bitplicated. It seems his ex–wife cheated on him, the child wasn’t biologically his, and the child was taken away by the ex–wife. His parents are elderly, and he’s very filial. He spends most of his time at home with them.”
That suggested the other party might have used Hector’s parents to threaten him.
“Have Jake keep an eye on Hector. Make sure he doesn’t blow his cover. Jake doesn’t need to be on the
same shifts as Megan for now. Try to schedule him with Hector during night shifts,” said Chris.
Francesca immediately went downstairs to make the arrangements.
“Having a secretary really makes a difference. Now you’re getting used to giving orders. Not bad.”
Roy lit a cigarette.
There had been women in the room earlier, so he hadn’t smoked.
When the pressure was too high or his mind was too active, a cigarette helped calm him down quickly.
“So, what do you think?” Roy asked Chris.
Stepping outside of his professional role, Chris’s perspective tended to be more objective.
By habit, Roy couldn’t afford to let any suspect go, which could sometimes lead to confusion
Chris mentioned the theory he and Jessica had discussed the previous night.
Jessica and I both thought it might be Luke. After all, he’s the only one currently in the pharmaceutical business. But after listening to Megan’s ount, I no longer think it’s him. To be honest, Luke isn’t that clever. There’s no way he could have orchestrated such a detailed n.”
Roy puffed out some smoke and nodded. “Yeah, I agree with you. If it’s not Luke, then it can only be Michael Aitairy. Mandy once exposed Aitairy’s scam while she was abroad. There might be confidential information about Aitairy on her hard drive.”
More than 24 hours had passed.
The police had set up surveince at Mandy’s house.
Everyone was on high alert, waiting for the kidnapper’s next move.
All the intelligence they got from Megan showed that the at the Summit Infirmary was already huge.
Fortunately, Chris hadn’t startled the person behind everything.
“That means there are probably many people like Megan and Hector. Trying to catch them all one by one could take a very long time.”
By noon, Roy had already gone to Mandy’s house.
Ashley and Jake were eating lunch in Chris’s office.
Francesca had specially ordered portions for the three of them.
“I’ve seen the new schedule. Starting next week, I’ve got three consecutive night shifts with Hector. I haven’t really gotten to know him before.”
Jake picked all the onions out of his food.
