cold, she said nothing and left the ward.

    The air grew still.

Johan stared nkly at the ceiling, a fierce glint in the corner of his

    eyes.

Corrine… do you really wish me dead?

Cecilia and Larissa exited the hospital room one after another.

Cecilia knew Larissa wouldn’t admit anything no matter how she pressed.

    So she simply kept quiet.

After leaving the doctor’s office, Wesley went to see Johan.

Johan asked, “Neither of them was found?”

    “No.”

Wesley still briefed Johan about how Holden had threatened Corrine. What Johan decided next was his own business.

“I’ll keep things stable at thepany while you recover.”

Johan closed his eyes briefly. “Thanks.”

“Word about Holden has been sent back. The Johnson family will likely send someone within a day or two,” Wesley reminded his friend.

“I know.” Johan nodded. “After all these years, some things need settling.”

“There’s another matter I need to discuss-”

Wesley and Cecilia left the hospital.

Neither spoke during the drive back.

    Midway, Elijah took a call.

He turned around. “Mr. Carlton, we found her.”

Cecilia had been leaning listlessly against the window with her eyes closed. At those words, she immediately straightened up.

    “Found who?” she pressed.

    “It’s Ms. Morton.”

Cecilia’s hands clenched abruptly on her knees.

    Corrine.

    They’d found Corrine.

“How. how is she?” Her voice trembled.

Cecilia’s heart felt heavy. Though she knew the oue might be grim, she had to ask.

Elijah paused for two seconds,/his tone filled with pity. “Sorry for your loss.”

    Two words summed everything up.

Everything went ck before Cecilia’s eyes, her ears buzzing so loudly she couldn’t hear anything else.

She’d known Corrine’s chances were slim under those circumstances, yet she’d clung to a sliver of hope.

    “Ci.”

Victor Carlton gripped her hand tightly, pulling her into his embrace,

    Cecilia broke down sobbing.

Victor’s eyes grew moist as he held her firmly.

    “I know. I know everything.”

Cecilia cried for a long time, soaking Victor’s shirt through.

Finallyposing herself, she said, “Where is she? I need to see her.”

She had to see Corrine onest time.

Elijah said, “She’s already in the morgue, Mrs. Carlton. Ms. Morton… her condition isn’t suitable for viewing. Perhaps you shouldn’t-”

    “I’m going.”

    Cecilia cut Elijah off.

No matter what state Corrine was in, she would go.

    Victor spoke up, “Go.”

He handed Cecilia a bottle of water. “Have some water first. Calm yourself. Corrine still needs you to be strong.”

Cecilia mindlessly took a few sips, her mind feeling like mush.

Elijah couldn’t bear to watch, whispering: “Wesley…”

Wesley shot him an icy stare. “Send more people to keep searching.”

He looked down at Cecilia, his expression softening as his fingers brushed her pale cheek. A bitter smile touched his lips.

“She hasn’t rested properly for days. I can’t let her keep exhausting herself over Corrine like this.”

    Cecilia was utterly exhausted.

    Yet she refused to rest.

Wesley saw no other choice but to lie.

Short–term pain is better than lifelong suffering.

So he deliberately had Elijah announce Corrine’s death, hoping to sever Cecilia’s lingering attachment.
