He tossed the bag of pastries onto the table and grabbed his phone, wanting to call Anneliese and give her a piece of his mind.

Mnie stopped him. “Let it slide, Chris. It’s her birthday too. It’s no surprise she’s upset because we forgot about her.”

“She was insulting us, Mom!” Christopher snapped, indignant.

Anneliese had clearly referred to them as Selina’spdogs.

Mnie sighed. “Well, we never raised Anne ourselves, so she’s got a sharp tongue and a wild personality. It’ll take time.”

Timothy frowned, clearly irritated. “Enough. Let’s get ready to board.”

When Anneliese arrived at school, she saw Jackson waiting outside the library.

He was carrying a tall stack of books. “Anneliese, I found some journals and papers worth reading. They are all yours.”

“That’s nice of you. Thank you very much,” Anneliese replied, reaching for them.

    Jackson took a step back.

“They’re heavy. Open the door, and I’ll carry them inside for you.”

Anneliese smiled, quickly opened the door, and poured him a cup of water.

They talked briefly about the books before Jackson made a move.

As he walked out of the teaching building with a smile on his face, a figure suddenly dashed out and blocked his path.

“Jackson, since when are you friends with Anneliese? She’s not a good woman, so don’t be fooled by her looks!”

    It was Lenora.

She had just seen them chatting in the corridor, ughing, and even going into a room together.

He’d been inside for quite a while before emerging.

Lenora had been trying to woo Jackson over for nearly two months, yet he never once smiled at her.

Why should Anneliese, that fox, get his attention instead?

Jackson’s sunny expression faded, and he frowned immediately.

“You’re not in a position to judge others.”

He stepped around Lenora and walked away. Frustrated, she pulled out her phone.

“Jackson, I swear I’m not lying. She’s a married woman!

“Yesterday, she was pulling and tugging with a man after leaving campus. They were fighting on the street, and his car nearly got wrecked!

“She’s so promiscuous that even her—”

Lenora trailed off, blushing. “Ugh, I can’t even bring myself to tell you some of the things she’s capable of. Either way, she’s filthy. If you don’t believe me, see for yourself!”

    Jackson looked at Lenora’s phone.

The photo showed a bulky man at a bus stop outside their school, holding Anneliese’s hand.

Judging by her clothes, it had been taken that very day.

Lenora saw him staring at the photo, convinced that he believed her.

She opened her mouth to continue, but Jackson’s cold voice cut her off.

“Delete the photo. I’ve seen it already, and if it spreads, it’s on you.

“Lenora, I don’t care why you’re trying to ruin her name. However, spreading false rumors is a crime. It doesn’t look good for you either.

“If it happens again, I’ll report you to the school. They’ll make someone of your character leave Astoria University.”

He walked off once he was done speaking, as if staying any longer would taint him.

That afternoon, Anneliese left school with the uneasy feeling of being watched.

She nced around several times but saw nothing, assuming it was just the lingering anxiety from running into Jacques at noon.

She had driven to school today. Her car drew attention, and she hadn’t wanted to drive into the parking lot, so she parked a distance away.

Once inside her car, she thought about buying a second–hand vehicle to keep things lowkey.

Back home, Anneliese made herself something to eat before taking Meatloaf for a walk downstairs.

After twops, she was about to head back when Meatloaf suddenly bolted, pulling hard against the leash.

A bad feeling hit her immediately. As Meatloaf barked wildly, Anneliese caught sight of a tall figure ahead of them.

She stumbled forward while Meatloaf dragged her along, bumping and tripping toward the

    man.

By the end of it, she was utterly drained.

It wasn’t until Meatloaf flopped at Jonathan’s feet and rolled over that she steadied herself, speechless.

“I’m starting to think she belongs to you instead…” she uttered.

Jonathan bent down, stroking Meatloaf’s head. Hearing Anneliese say that, he looked at her.

    “Perhaps,” he replied.

Anneliese paused, thenughed dismissively. “That’s impossible. I’ve had Meatloaf for twelve years.”

Besides, Meatloaf had been a gift from Zacharias. What did Jonathan have to do with her dog?
