He gripped his phone tightly before dialing Anneliese’s number again, but the girl did not pick <ol><li>up. </li></ol>

She picked one up and brought it to his lips, her eyes full of hope.
Unable to disappoint her, Zacharias opened his mouth and took a bite.
“Is it good? How’s my baking?”
However, he could not focus on the taste of the cookies.
Even with Selina standing before him, his mind was filled with the image of Anneliese’s chilling expression.
He nodded absent–mindedly, then pushed away the hand offering him another cookie. “Selina, I need to head back now.”
He turned to leave, but Selina had no ns of letting him walk out so easily.
She clung to him tightly and pleaded, “Zach, the party is less than twelve hours away. Do you really have to leave now? I want so much for you to stay and celebrate with me.”
She knew he had just called Anneliese, but she was confident that she could keep Zacharias by
her side.
After all, Anneliese was nothingpared to her.

To her shock, Zacharias slowly pulled his arm free from her grasp. “I’m sorry, Selina. I really have to go back.”

“Plus, my parents and brothers are on their way. I even begged them to bring Anne along this time.”
Zacharias had been determined to leave, his expression unshaken.

He finally understood why Anneliese had been upset enough to block his number–she loved

“I even prepared an evening gown for Anne. Come with me. I’ll try it on first so you can see how it looks.”
Selina set the tray aside, took his hand, and led him toward the dressing room on the second floor.
As if it were the most natural thing in the world for a man and his sister–inw to be alone together, she seemed oblivious that their behavior was improper.
Zacharias, lost in the warmth of her closeness, was convinced she was just an open–minded
person.
