Chapter 50 Misunderstanding Cleared
The phone spun slowly in Jonathan’s palm.
Anneliese’s checks turned scarlet as she kept her head down and blurted in a rush.
“Fine, just block me already!”
Jonathan’s voice dropped into a lowmand. “Lift your head. Look at me, then say again.”
With tears clinging to hershes, Anneliese raised her face and forced herself to meet Jonathan’s cool gaze.

that
She pressed her hands together against her chest and begged. “I’m really sorry, boss. Words fail me. I never should’ve judged your noble character through my filthy lens!
“That’s unforgivable. To make up for it, I’ll leave right now and spare you the trouble of seeing me again.”
She bent low, grabbed Meatloaf close, and rushed out.
The door mmed shut behind her.
Jonathan made no move to stop her. The silence in the room grew heavy.
His long, sharp fingers tugged loose the tie of his robe. Silk slipped apart, and a chill draft cut through the heat clinging to him.
His eyes lingered on the armchair nearby. The leather still carried the faint shape of her body.
He stared at it for a long moment, his throat tight, before leaning back in his chair and letting out a heavy breath.
After a pause, a roughugh broke out of him, low and sharp, as if he wasn’t sure whether it was for himself or her.
Meanwhile, Anneliese hurried back to her ce.
She locked the door and downed two sses of cold water, yet it still couldn’t cool her burning face.

God, she didn’t even want to think about how Jonathan saw her now. She must’ve looked foolish, selfish, and ridiculous.
She dropped onto the couch, buried her face in a pillow, and stayed there without moving.
Then, her phone rang.
She didn’t want to answer. She wanted quiet.
Yet, the ringing continued, over and over, until she snatched it up, swiped to connect, and snapped. “Who the hell is this? Can you not?”
Silence stretched for a few seconds, then a familiar voice came through, one that only irritated her more.
“You haven’t been answering my calls. Anneliese, did you block me again?”
She pulled her head from the pillow, nced at the screen, and froze.
It was a video call from Zacharias. And she had already answered.
Her brows knit together. She hadn’t blocked him. She had only set his calls to be sent to voicemail.
She hadn’t cut him offpletely since the divorce wasn’t final, and she knew they still had things to fight about. Blocking and unblocking was just a hassle.
“If you’ve got something to say, say it. If you’re just going to waste my time, then I’m hanging up on you.” Her voice was t, her finger ready to disconnect.
Zacharias‘ handsome features hardened like ice. His voice came sharp and cold. “Anneliese, where are you? Who are you with? What are you doing?”
His face and tone belonged to a jealous husband catching his wife in betrayal.
Anneliese blinked, then let out augh. Only then did she notice her reflection in the small window of the call.
She was sprawled on a couch that wasn’t hers. Her hair was tangled, and her cheeks were flushed.
Her lips were red and swollen, bitten earlier from nerves and glossed now with water. She looked like a woman who had just been kissed breathless.
Even her blouse hung loose, the tie at her neckline undone without her realizing. It was

No wonder Zacharias thought she cheated on him, but even if she did, what right did he have to question her?
Her smile turned mocking. “Are you using me of infidelity?”
His anger cracked into unease. He forced a sigh, his voice softening.
“Baby, you’re imagining things. I’m just worried about you. I’ve been away on a business trip. I keep calling and you never answer, and I—”
She cut him off, her smile sharp with bitterness. “Are you really on a business trip, Zacharias?”
“Of course I am…”
But his eyes flickered.
He had a feeling she had figured it out. She knew he wasn’t away on work. She knew who he was with.
His words stopped. Silence pressed down on both of them.
Anneliese’s eyes curved as she smiled, her voice sweet and cutting.
“Where’s Selina? Taking my ce and doing my job as your wife in bed?”
Without another nce at his pale face, she hung up.
Over in Age, Zacharias‘ voice cracked in panic as the screen went ck. “Baby! Anne?”
It felt like something inside him shattered with the call, leaving nothing but wreckage behind.
