I smiled, trying to look harmless. From how Victoria stood in front of the door, trying to block my view of the door, I was suspicious. There has to be something hidden inside this room.

I pushed my hair back before tucking some strands behind my ear. I looked around before speaking, “I lost my way while returning, carried away by the beautiful artworks on the walls.” My eyesnded on an artwork I hadn’t noticed before.

I moved towards it and trailed my hand around the edges, “Where did you get them from?” I inquired curiously. This seemed to take her off the edge.

“I bought it during an auction. You know how these things are.” She said with a sense of pride. I smirked, removing my hand, knowing I had zero interest in how she got the piece and wasn’t ready for any lectures from her.

“I see.” My voice was soft as I continued, “I’m so sorry I got lost. Is there anything I missed?” She shook her head. “No. You didn’t return early, and you weren’t in the restroom. Honestly, I was a little scared.” She tried tough at the end, but it

    looked forced.

“Let’s go back, Mrs. Everett is waiting.” She led the way, and I walked behind her. I turned back to the room when we were about to step out of the hallway, unable to shake the feeling that something about that ce was off and needed my

    attention.

For now, I’ll leave and think about how you get into that room some other time.

    Lydia’s POV

Mason drove me home after our time in the cafe. I was too tired to go to the office, not physically but mentally. On my way back, I called Mia and informed her about what happened and my n to press charges against Mr. ddins. I will not let

    it slide.

I stepped into the sitting room. My pace was slow, as I was still trying to process all that had happened today, from the meeting down to my conversation with Mason.

It is true that I have forgiven him and do not hate him anymore. Everything that happened between us was a misunderstanding propagated by Victoria. If Victoria weren’t in the picture, then Mason and I would never have been separated. if there was one person I wasn’t going to forgive, it was her.

Not only for separating Mason and me, but also for attempting to kill my twins. Hurting my children is like dipping a finger into my eyes, and I would never let that slide.

“Lydia,” Mom called behind me just as I was about to take the first step. I paused and turned to see her walking towards me. There is an apron around her head and tied to her back, and she was wiping her hands on a napkin.

“Mom,” I said, my voice low. “Are you alright?” She asked, and I nodded, “But you don’t look fine. I tried to get your

I smiled, not wanting to burden her with my thoughts, “I am just lost in thought.” She assessed me, her eyes moving from my face to my feet and back to my face.

“I got off work early so I can rest and spend time with the kids.” I lied. “I’ll freshen up ande join you in the kitchen.”

Liam and Mnie were taking a nap. I didn’t go into their room because I didn’t want to disturb them. I joined mom in the kitchen. It has been so long since we cooked together, but standing next to her in the kitchen, it didn’t feel like it always

    did.

It seems just like me, Mom had a lot on her mind, and I didn’t want to pry into her head either.

After eating, I spent the rest of the day at home in my study. It was twenty minutes past 8 pm when two heads poked through my door. I raised my head to find Liam and Mnie standing by the door.

Taking off my sses, I invited them in. They walked side by side and stopped in front of my table. They have never tried to mother me when I was working, so this was new: “Are you okay?” I asked, sharing my gaze between them.

“Yes. You seem to have a lot to do,” Liam said, and I nodded. “We wanted to spend time with you, but we don’t want to bother you.” I gestured for them toe over to my side, and they did.

“Oh my babies.” I held them both to myself, each seated on onep, their warmth engulfed me, and all the stress I had been feeling quickly washed away.

“Mom will always have time for her babies.” I kissed them on their cheeks, “What do you want to do? Draw? Sing? dance?” Mom will always be ready to do it for you.”

They giggled as I tickled them. When theughter finally died down, Mnie spoke. “We know you are busy, so…”

“You don’t have to y with us today. Besides, it’ste.” Liampleted.

What did I do to deserve such understanding babies? brushed Mnie’s hair to the back with my hand. “So, you can y with us tomorrow.” I can absolutely do that, spend the day with kids alone.

“Yes, Mason ising to take us out. You should join us, too.” Liam added, “It will be fun to have you spend the day with

    us, too.”

1 don’t know if I want to see Mason, but I am not ready to disappoint my twins. So I kissed them both on their cheeks again

and agreed toe with them. “Yes, I will be.”

After Mnie and Liam left, I did a little work before receiving a text message from Marcus. He wanted to meet and said it was urgent. He was waiting for me at the usual café where we always meet. When I got there, he was already there waiting for me. He waved as I walked towards him.

Standing in front of him, I pulled out a chair and sat opposite him.

He is there in his work clothes, a suit and a tie, evidence that he had not gone home to change before calling me out. There are a few people scattered across the café, chatting slowly with different desserts in front of them, some just ice cream and some coffee.

    09:35 Sat, 30 Aug

“What is so important that you could not wait?” I asked and slowly peeped at my wristwatch, the time read 10:30 p.m. “Was it so important that you could not wait for a few more hours to tell me tomorrow?” I chuckled at the end of my sentence. Marcus had a cup of coffee in front of him. Wasn’t it toote for coffee?

“What would you want?” he asked.

“Cappino,” I responded, and got it in the next few minutes. “So why did you want to see me?” I asked.

“Do I need a reason?” He didn’t wait for my response before speaking, “I just wanted to see you. I miss you.”

Marcus was trying so hard to put it all together, I could see from the way he kept ying with his wristwatch, then his ring, and then barely looking at me, that was my clue that something was wrong. He had something he wanted to say, and he probably didn’t know how to start.

“Is there something you want to tell me?” I asked, thinking that me speaking first would make it easier for him.

He raised his eyes and stared at me for a long time without saying anything. It was so long. It made me ufortable, it

had been so long since he stared at me in this manner.

He nodded slowly. “Yes, I have something I want to say to you,” he said.

“What is it? It should be free, buddy. Never pegged you for a nervous one,” I joked.

“I’m returning back to Italy,” he said in his thick ent.

I raised a brow. “Why all of a sudden? What happened?” I enquired. “Is this about your mother?” His mother wasn’t fine some time ago. “Did the sicknesse back? When will you be back?”

He shook his head after I was done speaking. He bit his lower lip and spoke slowly.

“This is not about my mother,” he said, paused, and continued. “It is about me?” he drew in a scent of breath, “I have decided to go back home because I have some things to take care of, and I am not sure I’ll being back.”

I made an “oh” with my mouth. “I’m going to miss you,” I said, and I meant it.

Marcus was like my backbone. We have spent so much time here together, and he turned from a business partner to a

    friend

4 cannot exin how much he means to me, and it wasn’t that I didn’t think he was ever going to leave, I just didn’t expect to feel this way about it.

He reached for my hand and covered it with his “You know how I feel about you, right?”
