Felix’s eyes widened as he realized that his mother bribed the police.
But even though her son was staring at her with judgment, Madeline straightened her posture and raised her chin. “I will not be looked down at for protecting my family,” she said. “I would do the same thing for you that I’ve done for your sister.”
“Yeah? Well, that’s the difference between Chloe and me. I would never ask you to do something like that,” Felix said and shook his head in disgust.
Madeline kept talking like her son hadn’t interrupted her. “Officer Warren is the same man who helped me five years ago and now he’s going to help me again. He has assured me that he is going to find a way to throw Olivia and Kelly in jail.”

Madeline smirked in satisfaction at how well her n was shaping out to be. People might judge her for what she has done, but no one could deny that she loved her kids. Some might say that she loved them to a fault, but Madeline could never put Chloe in a mental hospital. She shuddered at the thought of how scared Chloe would be, and then what if it got out that her daughter was in one of those ces? Just think about the things that people would say. She might have had her weak moments when she regretted not getting Chloe help, but now she was convinced that she had made the right decision.
“You think that Olivia is going to jail?” Felix asked.
“Her and her meddling friends are in jail right now…” Madeline said

“No, Mom. Through my sources at the Ld police department, I heard that Alexander bailed Olivia and the rest of her group out of jail.” Felix said. “They were bailed outst night even before I paid the money to bail you out. My sources told me that they were headed
straight for themissioner’s office.”
Chloe’s hands balled into fists and Mrs. Windsor’s face went white. “Are you serious?” she asked.
“Yep,” Felix answered. “I guess money can’t buy you everything. Maybe it won’t even be enough to buy you two innocence this time.” The second part he had said under his breath, but his mother and sister still heard him.
“I knew that Alexander wanted to protect Olivia for whatever reason, but I didn’t know that he cared about the girl this much,” Mrs. Windsor said and shook her head in dismay.
“I told you not to mess with Olivia,” Felix said. “Remember, I warned you against it. Alexander and his family are too powerful to have as an enemy. With the amount of money and influence Alexander has, he has the ability to move mountains.”
Because of the news that Olivia and her horrible friends had been released from jail, arge lump had developed in Chloe’s throat. But she tried to seem like she was unaffected by this news. She didn’t want her brother or mother to know how much she was panicking on the inside. “Well, who cares if they are going to themissioners office? There is no evidence of any crime,” Chloe insisted. “Since Russell’s body isn’t in our orchard, Alexander doesn’t have a leg to stand on.”
Madeline snapped her fingers and looked to her daughter like she was throwing her a life buoy. “Exactly! Haven’t you heard the old saying:

no body, no crime?”
Felix shook his head in disgust. Even though he wanted to get away from his mother and sister, his curiosity got the better of him. “Okay, I have to know. Where the hell did you guys put the body if you didn’t bury it in our orchard?”
But Felix’s question was met with silence. Chloe looked to her mother, and Madeline shook her head just slightly.
Felix threw his hands up in frustration. “Really? Even now, you two are going to keep secrets from me?”
Madeline’s face softened. “No, that’s not it at all, sweetie. It’s just that the less you know, the better. Then, you can’t be questioned by the police. The only thing that matters is that Olivia and her group don’t know where the body is.”
“I found a w in your n,” Felix said.
Madeline’s widened. “What?”
