“Oh, that was just people joking around in college. There were plenty of girls at our school who were way prettier than me.”

William only gave a small smile and didn’t continue the topic.

By the time they finished eating, it was already past nine.

When they walked out of the restaurant, Liz offered to drive him home, but William turned her down.

“No need. We live in opposite directions anyway. I’ll just grab a cab. It’s gettingte, so you should head home.” Liz hesitated for a moment, then nodded. “Alright. Just text me when you get home. See you.”

    “Okay. See you.”

Liz gave him a little wave before turning to her car. Once she was inside, she nced back toward the restaurant door, only to find that the tall figure standing there a moment ago had already disappeared.

Pressing her lips together, she pushed down the faint disappointment stirring in her chest and started the engine. The car was fixed now. From here on, chances of them seeing each other again would be slim.

Only after Liz’s car waspletely out of sight did William pull out his phone and call Uncle Zeller to pick him up. Uncle Zeller already knew William was returning Liz’s car that day, so he had been waiting nearby. Within ten minutes, a ck G–ss pulled up in front of William.

He opened the door, got in, and immediately caught Uncle eller’s curious look.

William raised a brow. “What is it?”

“Nothing. I just thought you’d let Ms. Smith drive you home.”

    William was rendered speechless.

As Uncle Zeller started the engine, he continued, “At the pace you’re going, who knows how many years it’ll take before you actually win her over.”

William frowned. “If you’re that boredtely, maybe you should sign up to drive for a ride–hailing app.”

“I’m plenty busy. A few olderdies asked me to join them for line dancing in the park, and I’ve had to turn them all down.”

The car fell into silence. Just as Uncle Zeller was about to speak again, William’s phone rang.

When he saw the caller ID, his eyes narrowed as he answered.

“Mr. Sanders, the Stone Corporation is backing the Harris Corporation.”

Because William had a decent rtionship with Jack in private, he hadn’t dared make a direct move against the

    Stones.

Lowering his gaze, William tapped his fingers lightly against the car window. Based on what he knew of Jack, he wouldn’t help someone without a reason.

    “Got it.”

After ending the call, William immediately dialed Jack’s number, asking where he was and arranging to meet.

Half an hourter, the two men sat down in a teahouse.

As soon as Jack sat, William handed him a cup of tea. The liquid was filled to the brim, nearly spilling over.

Jack raised a brow, smirkingzily as he took it. “What is this, a trap? If I’d known, maybe I wouldn’t havee.”

“Why did you help the Harris family?”

Jack froze for a moment before catching on.

“You’re the one working against them?”

    “Yes.”

“Why? What did the Harris family do to you?”

Suddenly, Jack’s expression shifted. Shock flickered across his face as he asked, “Don’t tell me you’re going after them because of Liz?”

    “Yes.”

William admitted it without hesitation, meeting his eyes directly. “She’s the woman I like.”

Jack sat in silence for a while before finally speaking. “Can’t you let the Harris family go this once? In return, I’ll help you pursue Liz. How about that?”

“First tell me why you’re helping them.”

    Jack fell silent.

William didn’t press him. He simply lifted his cup and took a slow sip of tea, waiting.

After a long pause, Jack finally confessed what had happened one drunken night.

At the end, he rubbed his temple and said wearily, “She told me that as long as I helped her this once, she’d never bother me again.”
