The phone rang for a long time before the other end finally picked up.

    “What is it?”

The voice was cool and detached, as cold as ever.

Jack raised an eyebrow. “Dr. Sanders, I never thought the untouchable, high–and–mighty you would ever bend over backward for someone.”

He still found it hard to believe what Jane had told him–that William had been driving Liz to and from work every day.

    “Speak inly.”

    Jack was momentarily speechless.

He took a deep breath. There was no point getting riled up. He would just wait until William embarrassed himself chasing after Liz, and then he would enjoy the show.

“I heard from my sister that you’ve been giving Liz rides every day because you hit her car. If I remember right, you used to turn down every female colleague who asked for a lift, saying you had a germ thing. What happened? Suddenly cured?”

William stopped at a red light, his fingers tappingzily against the steering wheel, his expression unreadable. He could hear the teasing in Jack’s tone.

The truth was, when it came to Liz, he was absolutely up to something—and he had no intention of denying it.

    “She’s not like the others.”

    “What’s so different about her?”

“You’re the kind of guy who only knows how to work. You wouldn’t get it. After all, you don’t have a girlfriend.”

Just as the light turned green, William ended the call and drove off.

In his office, Jack stared at the “call ended” screen for a few seconds before it sank in.

    “Seriously?”

He had only just started pursuing Liz–hadn’t even made any real progress–and the guy already had the nerve to take a jab at his love life?

What if Liz didn’t even like him back?

And honestly, who was the one who used to work nonstop every single day?

Deciding he couldn’t let this slide, Jack made a mental note to talk to Liz the next time he saw her and let her know William’s “true colors”

He finished organizing his report, stood up to leave, and just then his phone rang. It was a friend.

“Jack, it’s been ages since we all got together. Let’s grab a drink tonight.”

He had nothing nned, so he got the address and headed straight over.

Meanwhile, after hanging up with her brother, Jane raised an eyebrow at Liz.

“My brother says the guy who hit your car is solid. Plus, he works in the same department as him. Liz, maybe you should give him a chance.”

Liz looked at her with helpless resignation.

“Come on, princess, give me a break. When I ran into a high school ssmate in the Maldives, you said it was perfect because we already knew each other.

“Now, just because William hit my car and is giving me rides while it’s in the shop, you want me to ‘give him a chance‘? Could you at least consider how I feel first? Even if I liked him, what makes you think he’d like me back?”

Jane stared at her, pletely serious. “When’s thest time you looked in the mirror?”

“This afternoon. Why? Is my makeup smudged?”

Liz started to reach for herpact, but Jane caught her hand.

“You look in the mirror every day, and you’ve never noticed you’ve got a face no one could say no to? If I looked like you, I’d be changing boyfriends every week.”

Eight years wasted on Zac–it was nothing short of a tragedy.

    Liz said nothing.

Seeing her on the verge of rolling her eyes, Jane quickly added, “Alright, alright, I’ll drop it. I’m starving. Let’s go eat.”

At the restaurant, after cing their order, Jane rested her chin’in one hand and stared out the window with a troubled expression.

“What’s wrong with you? You just had your birthday yesterday. You must have gotten a ton of gifts. Shouldn’t you be happy?”

Jane sighed and turned back to her. “That’s exactly why I’m not happy. My dad said I’m starting my internship at thepany this week. From the way he’s talking, it sounds like he’s nning to hand the whole thing over to me.”
