William started the car, and the two of them settled into afortable silence.
Liz didn’t know him well and wasn’t sure what to talk about, so she stayed quiet and watched the city slip by outside the window.
She wore a long, pale blue down coat, and her hair was pulled into a neat bun that revealed her smooth forehead and slender, fair neck. Her skin was so clear and delicate that anyone would have believed her if she said she was a college student in her early twenties.
Out of the corner of his eye, William nced at her, his expression openly gentle.
Half an hourter, he pulled up in front of her building.
Liz unbuckled her seatbelt and turned to him. “Thanks for the ride.”
“See you tomorrow.”
“Alright. Drive safe.
She got out and watched his car pull away. The moment she turned around, she spotted Jane standing not far off, one eyebrow raised in amusement.
Surprised, Liz quickly walked over. “Jane, what are you doing here?”
Jane gave her a sly smile. “You’ve got something going on. Who was that man who just dropped you off?”
“How do you know it was a man?”
“Most women don’t choose ck for that model, and judging from the way he was driving, I’d say there’s a high chance he’s male.”
Liz couldn’t helpughing. “You really should consider bing a detective.”
“Don’t change the subject. Be honest–what’s going on?”
Linking her arm through Jane’s, Liz led her toward the building entrance. “Actually, this has something to do with you.”
Jane looked confused. “With me?”
Liz gave her a quick rundown of how William had identally backed into her car the night
before.
By the time she finished, Jane was staring at her in disbelief. “So you’re letting someone you met less than a day ago drive you to and from work? You’re not worried he could be dangerous?”
“I don’t think so. He knows Jack, and they seem to get along well. I trust Jack’s judgment.”
Jane frowned. “Funny, I don’t remember my brother having a friend like that. I’m calling him right now.”
She pulled out her phone and dialed. “Jack, that friend of yours fromst night–the one who hit Liz’s car–can he be trusted? I heard he’s nning to drive her to work every day until her car’s fixed. You’re sure he’s not up to something?”
Jack was in the middle of writing a report, but her question made him raise an eyebrow.” You’re serious?”
From what he knew, William barely acknowledged women. He always wore the same stony expression, like someone owed him a fortune. Even at work events, when female colleagues asked for a ride, he would turn them down without blinking. The idea of him driving a woman to work every day was almost impossible to picture.
“I’m serious. I just saw it myself. Liz got out of his car less than five minutes ago.
“Rx. I’ve known him for years. His character’s solid. And… haven’t you been nagging me to introduce Liz to one of my single friends? He’s in my department, keeps to himself,es from a wealthy family, and is better looking than Zac. Checks all your boxes.”
Jane’s mood brightened immediately. “Good to know. You really doe through when it counts, big brother.”
Jack gave a dryugh. “Oh, so I’m ‘big brother‘ when you need something, but just Jack the rest of the time? Nice.”
“Of course. Anyway, I have to go. Talkter.”
She hung up before he could respond, leaving Jack shaking his head with a helpless smile.
Just as he set the phone down, Jane’s earlierment about William driving Liz to work shed through his mind.
His brows lifted slightly, and without hesitation, he dialed William’s number.
