“I understand, Mr. Quinn. Thank you,” Liz said calmly.
Warren let out a quiet sigh and said slowly, “Ms. Smith, if Mr. Lincoln insists on using these kinds of tactics to steal your clients, there’s really nothing we can do to stop him. Maybe… maybe you should go talk to him?”
After all, they used to be a couple. If Liz reached out herself, there might still be a chance to turn things around.
Liz stood and looked at him. “Alright. I’ll think about it. If there’s nothing else, I’ll head out now.”
“Alright.”
Back at her desk, Liz stared at herputer screen for a while. Then, as if finally making up her mind, she stood up, grabbed her bag, and walked toward the exit.
Hunter noticed and quickly got up to follow. “Liz, where are you going?”
“I’m going to see someone. You don’t need toe. Go back and keep reviewing the case files.”
Sensing something was off, Hunter lowered his voice. “Let me go with you.”
“No. I’ll be fine on my own.”
He didn’t argue, but he also didn’t leave. Instead, he pressed the elevator button to go down.
The elevator doors opened quickly, and they both stepped in. Liz pressed the button for the basement level and then went quiet, her eyes lowered, clearly lost in thought.
Hunter stood beside her, watching her with concern.
Soon, they arrived at the underground parking garage.
As soon as the doors opened, Liz walked out. Hunter followed close behind. When they reached her car, Liz pulled out her keys, ready to unlock it but a hand reached out in front of her.
“Let me drive,” Hunter said quietly,
After a brief pause, Liz handed him the keys. She walked around to the passenger side and got in.
Thirty minutester, her pink car pulled up outside Voyager Tech.
Liz turned to Hunter. “Wait for me here. I’ll be right back.”
“Okay. I’ll be here.”
She nodded, pushed open the door, and stepped out.
As soon as she entered the building, the receptionist stopped her. “Excuse me, Miss. Do you have an appointment? Without one, I’m afraid you can’t go in.”
Liz paused and pulled up Zac’s number from her blocked list. She dialed.
The phone nearly timed out, and just as her patience wore thin, someone finally picked up.
Zac’s mocking voice came through. “I was beginning to think my number would stay on your blocked list forever.”
Liz didn’t bother with small talk. “I’m downstairs.”
Then she hung up without
ting for a reply.
Less than five minutester, Chase arrived.
“Ms. Smith, Mr. Lincoln asked me to bring you upstairs.”
“Thank you.”
They took Zac’s private elevator all the way to the top floor. As soon as the doors opened, they ran into Xena, who was carrying a stack of files.
The moment she saw Liz, Xena’s expression stiffened. Her grip on the documents tightened.
Liz didn’t even look at her. She walked right past and headed straight for Zac’s office.
She didn’t bother to knock. She pushed the door open and walked in.
Zac was reviewing a document. When he heard the door, he looked up and met Liz’s icy stare. He raised an eyebrow.
“To what do I owe the visit?”
Liz’s tone was cold. “Zac, I’m not here to make small talk. Why are you sending people to steal my clients?”
Zac leaned back in his chair. “Because if I didn’t, were you nning to nevere see me again?”
Liz narrowed her eyes. “So you’ve been sabotaging me just to force me to show up?”
Just thinking about how an entire week of hard work, both hers and Hunter’s, had beenpletely ruined over something so petty made her even angrier.
