    Chapter 503 Still Don’t Understand

    Asher’s heartbeat picked up.

He didn’t know if Jean was aware of the setup… or how she felt about it.

    All he knew was-

    <i>I </i>wanted <i>to </i><i>be </i>here.

    And that’s why <i>tonight </i>happened.

    Jean’s <i>surprised </i>expression carlier pretty much confirmed <i>she </i><i>had </i><i>no </i><i>idea </i><i>what </i><i>this </i><i>dinner </i><i>was </i><i>actually </i><i>about</i><i>. </i>

    And honestly?

    I’m a little worried <i>she </i><i>might </i><i>be </i><i>freaked </i><i>out</i>.

Right then, the dining room door opened again.

Jean walked in, with Sienna following right behind.

“Jean,e sit down,” Mindy said warmly, motioning her over. Then she smiled at Sienna. “Please, Madam Sienna, have a seat too.”

By now, Mindy had already shaken off the shock and was feeling calm–and genuinely pleased.

At first, she’d been a bit nervous about this whole arrangement.

    <i>Asher </i><i>was </i><i>still </i><i>young</i>. <i>Was </i><i>it </i><i>really </i><i>a </i><i>good </i><i>idea </i><i>to </i><i>start </i><i>nudging </i><i>him </i><i>toward </i><i>rtionships </i><i>so </i><i>early</i>?

    But <i>this </i><i>had </i><i>all </i><i>been </i><i>orchestrated </i><i>by </i><i>Madam </i><i>Lawson</i><i>, </i><i>and </i><i>I </i><i>couldn’t </i><i>exactly </i><i>oppose </i><i>it</i>.

    <i>And </i><i>the </i><i>other </i><i>party </i><i>was </i><i>the </i><i>legendary </i><i>Ginger </i><i>family</i>. <i>Not </i><i>exactly </i><i>someone </i><i>you </i><i>turn </i><i>down</i>.

    <i>Still</i><i>, </i>I <i>had </i><i>made </i><i>up </i><i>my </i><i>mind</i>.

    <i>If </i><i>Asher </i>liked <i>the </i><i>person</i>, I’d <i>support </i><i>him </i><ipletely</i>. <i>No </i><i>objections</i>, <i>no </i><i>pressure</i>.

    <i>I </i><i>want </i><i>to </i><i>respect </i><i>whatever </i><i>my </i><i>son </i><i>wants</i><i>. </i>

    <i>What </i><i>I </i><i>hadn’t </i><i>expected</i>, <i>though</i>, <i>was </i><i>that </i><i>the </i><i>Ginger </i><i>daughter- </i>

    <i>Would </i><i>turn </i><i>out </i><i>to </i><i>be </i><i>Jean</i>.

    <i>I </i><i>already </i><i>like </i><i>Jean </i><i>as </i><i>a </i><i>person</i><i>. </i><i>So </i><i>after </i><i>the </i>initial <i>surprise </i><i>faded</i><i>, </i><i>I </i><i>felt </i><i>nothing </i><i>but </i><i>relief</i><i>. </i><i>Maybe </i><i>even </i>joy.

    <i>Jean’s </i><i>character</i><i>, </i><i>her </i><i>temperament</i><i>–</i><i>I </i><i>didn’t </i><i>need </i><i>to </i><i>investigate </i><i>any </i><i>of </i><i>that</i><i>. </i>

    <i>And </i><i>the </i><i>bond </i><i>between </i><i>Jean </i><i>and </i><i>Asher</i><i>? </i><i>That </i><i>already </i><i>spoke </i><i>volumes</i><i>. </i>

    <b><i>If </i></b><i>something </i><i>really </i><i>did </i><i>blossom </i><i>between </i><i>them</i><i>… </i><i>Well</i><i>, </i><i>that’d </i><i>be </i>amazing.

Jean was sitting right in front of her now, and Mindy couldn’t help but smile.

The more she looked at her, the more she liked her. The more she saw, the more satisfied she felt.

Madam Lawson gave the order for dinner to be served.

Jean and Asher ended up sitting across from each other. Just a nce upward was enough for their eyes to

    meet.

Jean narrowed her eyes slightly, almost subconsciously, studying the boy across from her.

He kept his gaze lowered, his emotions hidden deep behind his calm exterior. His face gave away nothing- not even a hint of what might be on his mind.

    There was still one thing <i>I </i><i>couldn’t </i><i>figure </i><i>out</i><i>. </i>

    <i>If </i>Asher knew what kind <i>of </i>dinner <i>this </i><i>was </i><i>going </i><i>to </i><i>be</i><i>… </i><i>why </i><i>did </i><i>he </i><i>say </i><i>yes</i><i>? </i>

    <i>He’s </i>never struck me as <i>someone </i><i>interested </i><i>in </i>things like <i>this</i>.

    I’ve never seen any <i>girl </i><i>get </i><i>especially </i><i>close </i><i>to </i><i>him</i>. <i>Not </i><i>in </i><i>that </i><i>kind </i><i>of </i><i>way</i>. <i>Of </i><i>course</i><i>, </i><i>people </i><i>like </i><i>Sofia </i><i>and </i><i>I </i><i>don’t </i><i>count </i>-we’re <i>just </i><i>ssmates </i><i>and </i><i>friends</i><i>… </i>

    <i>Maybe </i><i>he’s </i><i>just </i><i>not </i><i>into </i><i>dating</i><i>? </i>

    <i>But </i><i>then </i><i>why </i><i>show </i><i>up </i><i>tonight</i><i>? </i>

    <i>Is </i><i>he </i><i>finally </i><i>starting </i><i>to </i><i>catch </i><i>feelings</i>?

    <i>Or</i><i>… </i>is <i>he </i><i>interested </i><i>in </i><i>the </i><i>Ginger </i><i>family</i>?

“Jean.” Sienna’s voice pulled her straight out of her thoughts.

Jean turned instinctively and looked at her mother.

    Sienna was smiling gently.

“The food’s here. If you’re hungry, go ahead and eat a little first.”

Jean nodded obediently and reached for her utensils.

Sienna had called her on purpose just now.

    <i>This </i>girl’s <i>imagination </i>was <i>running </i><i>wild </i><i>again</i>. <i>She’d </i><i>clearly </i><i>gotten </i><i>lost </i><i>in </i><i>her </i><i>own </i><i>head</i><i>. </i><i>If </i><i>I </i>hadn’t <i>spoken </i><i>up</i><i>, </i><i>she </i><i>probably </i><i>would’ve </i><i>stayed </i><i>zoned </i><i>out </i><i>the </i><i>whole </i><i>night</i>…

“Jean, we had this whole meal prepared just for tonight. Try it and see if it suits your taste,” Mindy said with a gentle smile. “Asher even took the time to-”

    But she stopped mid–sentence.

Asher had just turned to look at her.

His eyes locked onto hers, intense and unwavering.

That look clearly said one thing.

    <i>Don’t </i><i>finish </i><i>that </i><i>sentence</i>.
