The Family 502

    Chapter 502 If It’s Her, I Don’t Mind

Sienna chuckled at that. “Jean really is such a thoughtful girl.”

Jean nced toward the nearby dining room, her voice dropping a little.

“I wonder if Asher knows what this get–together was really about…”

    Finished

“He… probably does, right?” Sienna replied, sounding uncertain. “But I don’t think he knows you’re part of the Ginger family.”

    Jean blinked slowly.

    So <i>Asher </i>knew this <i>whole </i><i>thing </i>was <i>basically </i><i>a </i><i>setup</i><i>… </i><i>and </i><i>he </i><i>still </i><i>came</i><i>? </i>

    That really didn’t seem like <i>something </i><i>he’d </i><i>do</i><i>… </i>

“Jean?” Sienna called softly, noticing her daughter zoning out again.

    <i>We </i><i>had </i>been standing <i>outside </i><i>for </i><i>quite </i><i>a </i><i>while</i><i>. </i><i>It </i><i>was </i><i>probably </i><i>time </i><i>to </i><i>head </i><i>back</i><i>–</i><i>keeping </i><i>the </i><i>Lawsons </i><i>waiting </i><i>for </i><i>too </i><i>long </i><i>would </i><i>be </i><i>a </i>little <i>rude</i><i>. </i>

Jean snapped out of her thoughts and nodded toward her mom. “Let’s go back. It’s not polite to keep them

    waiting.”

Sienna took her hand, and the two of them walked back to the dining room, fingers intertwined.

Mindy and Asher had stayed there the whole time.

Once Jean and Sienna had stepped out, Madam Lawson looked at the two of them with surprise.

“You never mentioned you already knew the Ginger family’s daughter, Asher. Why didn’t you say anything?”

Mindy pressed her lips together and turned to gauge Asher’s reaction.

The connection with Jean wasn’t something that could be exined in a few words. Mindy didn’t know how to even begin, so she decided to let Asher take the lead.

Asher looked calmly at his grandmother. “I did mention she keeps alow profile at school.”

Madam Lawson paused for a moment, then let out a soft, understanding smile.

“Well, being ssmates is still a good start… You two seem to get along. Maybe you could grow a little closer.”

But Asher stayed quiet, lips pressed tightly together.

    <i>Today</i><i>… </i><i>I </i><i>had </i><i>my </i>own <i>reasons </i><i>for </i><iing</i><i>. </i>

    <i>Unlike </i><i>my </i><i>mother </i><i>and </i><i>grandmother</i><i>, </i>I <i>knew </i><i>exactly </i>who <i>I’m </i><i>going </i><i>to </i><i>meet</i><i>. </i>

    <i>Jean</i>.

    <i>When </i><i>Grandma </i><i>first </i><i>brought </i><i>up </i><i>this </i><i>dinner</i><i>, </i><i>she </i><i>told </i><i>me </i><i>inly- </i>

    <i>That </i><i>she </i><i>hoped </i><i>I’d </i><i>meet </i><i>someone </i><i>worth </i><i>pursuing</i>.

    Chapter 502 If It’s Her, I Don’t Mind

    <i>My </i>first <i>instinct </i>was <i>to </i>say <i>no</i>.

    I’ve never cared <i>for </i><i>this </i>kind <i>of </i><i>setup</i>.

    <i>Ever </i>since I <i>came </i><i>back </i>to <i>the </i><i>Lawsons</i>, <i>I’ve </i>had <i>women </i><i>trying </i><i>to </i><i>get </i><i>close </i>to <i>me </i><i>all </i><i>the </i><i>time</i>. <i>It’s </i><i>nothing </i><i>new</i>.

    <i>But </i><i>honestly</i>? <b><i>It’s </i></b><i>exhausting</i>.

    Finished

    <i>The </i><i>stronger </i><i>I </i>became, the more <i>people </i>came <i>crawling out </i><i>of </i><i>the </i><i>woodwork</i><i>, </i><i>trying </i>to <i>cozy </i>up <i>to </i><i>me</i><i>. </i><i>None </i><i>of </i><i>them </i><i>ever </i>cared <i>about </i><i>who </i><i>I </i>really was. <i>I </i><i>could </i><i>see </i><i>their </i><i>ambition </i>in <i>their </i><i>eyes</i>, <i>in </i><i>as </i><i>day</i>.

    <i>But </i>when <i>I </i>was at my <i>lowest</i>, drowning <i>in </i>darkness<b>… </b>

    All <i>I </i>got was <i>hate</i>. Disgust. Judgment.

    <i>No </i><i>one </i><i>reached </i><i>out </i>a <i>hand </i><i>back </i><i>then</i>.

    <i>It’s </i><i>easy </i><i>to </i><i>be </i><i>there </i><i>for </i><i>someone </i><i>at </i><i>their </i><i>peak</i><i>. </i><i>What </i>truly <i>matters </i>is <i>who’s </i><i>there </i><i>when </i><i>you’ve </i><i>hit </i><i>rock </i><i>bottom</i>.

    And at my <i>lowest</i>…

    <i>There </i><i>was </i><i>her</i><i>. </i>

    Even <i>now</i>, <i>every </i><i>time </i><i>I </i><i>think </i><i>back </i>on <i>those </i><i>darkest </i><i>days</i>, <i>I </i><i>always </i><i>see </i><i>Jean’s </i><i>face</i>.

    How <i>could </i><i>I </i><i>forget</i><i>? </i>

    <i>Jean </i><i>had </i><i>been </i><i>the </i><i>light </i><i>that </i><i>broke </i><i>through </i><i>all </i><i>that </i><i>suffocating </i><i>darkness</i>…

    <i>So </i><i>when </i><i>Grandma </i><i>mentioned </i><i>that </i><i>the </i><i>person </i>I’d <i>be </i><i>meeting </i><i>tonight </i><i>was </i><i>the </i><i>youngest </i><i>daughter </i><i>of the </i><i>Ginger family- </i>

    <i>I </i><i>couldn’t </i><i>say </i><i>no</i>.

    <i>I </i><i>already </i><i>knew </i><i>Jean </i><i>was </i><i>part </i><i>of </i><i>that </i><i>family</i><i>. </i><i>Not </i><i>for </i><i>long</i><i>, </i><i>but </i><i>long </i><i>enough</i>.

    And <i>if </i>it’s <i>Jean</i><i>… </i><i>I </i><i>don’t </i><i>mind</i><i>. </i>

    <i>Actually</i><i>, </i><i>I </i><i>might </i><i>even </i><i>be </i><i>a </i><i>little </i><i>hopeful</i>.

    <i>Is </i><i>she </i><iing</i>?

    <i>Does </i>she know she’s <i>here </i>to <i>meet </i><i>me</i><i>? </i>

    <i>Does </i><i>she </i>understand what <i>this </i><i>whole </i><i>evening </i><i>is </i><i>really </i><i>about</i><i>? </i>
