Chapter 564
When had ite to this?
Nancy suddenly found herself reduced to a mere onlooker, watching a scene that stabbed straight at her
chest.
For a moment, she felt like she might choke on her own anger.
It had always been Ariel watching her stand by Jayson’s side.
She suddenly understood why Jayson hadn’te out to meet her. Surely Ariel had been ying tricks to keep him inside.
Nancy’s gaze was sharp enough to hurt.
When Ariel turned to nce at her, her eyes were icy and indifferent. Standing on the steps above, she
seemed to look down on Nancy. She watched her trembling lips and the bitter, resentful re in her eyes.
Nancy was no longer the morous, arrogant figure she once was.
Meanwhile, Nancy felt a humiliating sense of disparity that made her chest tighten with difort. She
had nned to tug at Jayson’s heart by getting soaked in the rain. Yet now, it was Ariel–the one Jayson
was caring for–who saw her in this pitiful state.
Ariel was actually a little surprised. Nancy had changed so much from before. However, she felt no
sympathy whatsoever.
Instead, she thought it was simply poetic justice.
Even now, what she saw in Nancy’s expression wasn’t an awareness of her own mistakes but pure resentment and anger.
She realized that some people’s thinking was twisted and irrational to the core.
“No need. There’s someone else who actually needs your concern,” Ariel said.
She didn’t spare Nancy another nce and wasn’t nning to wear Jayson’s coat. She knew that doing so might shock Nancy, but she had no interest in indulging such petty theatrics. She had no intention of getting involved in their issues.
Though she did notice that the two of them weren’t as close as she had expected.
Jayson watched Ariel’s cold expression as she slipped off his coat and got into her car without looking
back.
She didn’t bother wondering what was going on between them and just drove away.
Jayson stayed there, watching her car vanish into the night.
Nancy saw his expression clearly, even though Jayson hadn’t shown any overt emotion. He was always difficult to read. She suddenly realized she had never truly understood him.
But now, guided by her instinct, she suddenly realized that Jayson had never explicitly expressed aversion or rejection toward Ariel.
Jayson slowly withdrew his gaze and looked at Nancy with one hand in his pocket.
As Nancy met that look, she felt a chill run down her spine.
She suddenly realized something.
Jayson had always looked at her the same way. But only now did she suddenly realize that beneath that calm gaze had alwaysin a streak of cold indifference.
“Jayson…” Nancy shivered. Her anger toward Ariel instantly gave way to a sense of panic. “Did Ariel say something to you that made you act like this?”
Jayson remained silent.
A car pulled up beside Nancy.
Arthur stepped out under his umbre and approached Nancy to give her a document. “Ms. Stanton, here’s a copy of the agreement you signed. Please review it.”
Nancy snapped back to reality and looked at the document with a cold expression.
When she read the contents, her expression changed drastically.
It was a wager agreement.
Back when Jayson had invested in Veyo Solutions, she had promised him a perfect performance within two years. Jayson had said he didn’t mind, but Matt had suggested a wager agreement, framing it as a yful challenge. If she seeded, all was well; if she failed, she could just give herself to Jayson. 1
At the time, she hadughed it off as a joke but had still agreed to it because she knew Jayson had invested a lot. She had wanted to prove her capability, to show she wasn’tpletely reliant on him, and
to silence critics.
In the end, she had suggested to Jayson that she sign a personal agreement like a pledge. If she failed to meet the performance targets or if thepany suffered any mishaps, she would personallypensate Jayson with 70% of his investment.
Jayson had said 70% was unnecessary and revised it to 30%, saying he didn’t want to put too much pressure on her.
